Men's names for Regency England, 1811 to 1820, from plain gentlemen such as Peregrine Oglander and Septimus Aldridge to Sir Ambrose Gascoyne, Colonel Greville Rawdon and The Earl of Beckhampton. Every entry is male, with the ranks and titles a gentleman, an officer or a peer would carry.

About male Regency names

The Regency proper ran from 1811 to 1820, when the Prince of Wales ruled as Regent for George III. A boy was christened from a short stock of names: John, William, Thomas, George, Henry, Charles, Edward and James fill the parish registers. Families added distinction with a second name, often the mother's maiden surname or a godfather's, which is how given names such as Greville, Wyndham, Courtenay and Spencer came about. Augustus, Horatio, Peregrine and Marmaduke marked the fashionable end.

How a man was addressed mattered as much as his name. A baronet or knight is Sir with the given name, so Sir Ambrose Gascoyne is Sir Ambrose and never Sir Gascoyne. A peer goes by his title, not his surname: The Earl of Beckhampton is Lord Beckhampton, and only a duke is never Lord anything. Younger sons of dukes and marquesses put Lord before the given name, as in Lord Julian Netherby. Younger sons of earls and all sons of viscounts and barons are The Hon., on paper only.

Officers went by rank. Army commissions were usually bought, so a boy of family could be a cornet or ensign at sixteen, while the navy made him serve as a midshipman first. The list also has clergy, physicians, squires, servants and Scottish, Irish and Welsh gentry.

How to choose male Regency names

  • Match the form to the scene. A narrator can write Sir Gervase Hobart, Bart. in full once; after that the drawing room says Sir Gervase and his old school friends say Hobart.
  • Give a peer both of his names. Francis Bamford, Earl of Elmsworth signs himself Elmsworth and is Lord Elmsworth to society, while a younger son is The Hon. Theodore Bamford on an envelope and plain Mr. Bamford in a ballroom.
  • Age an officer by his rank. A cornet, an ensign or a midshipman is a boy in his teens, a captain is usually in his twenties or thirties, and a general or an admiral has decades of service behind him.
  • Use the second name for backstory. In John Pelham Onslow the middle name is a surname, which in this period usually points to the mother's family or to a godfather with money to leave.
  • Keep the social ladder in view. Short biblical names such as Enoch Sowerby or Jabez Ackroyd suit a groom, a gamekeeper or a chapel-going tradesman, and would sound wrong on a marquess.

Frequently asked questions

What were common boy names in the Regency era?

A handful of names did most of the work: John, William, Thomas, George, Henry, Charles, Edward and James, with Frederick and Augustus made fashionable by the royal family. The list pairs them with rarer period choices, as in Peregrine Charles, Horatio James and Octavius Henry. Names that took off later in the century, such as Albert, Stanley or Clarence, would date a story set in the 1810s.

Is it Sir Ambrose or Sir Gascoyne?

Sir always goes with the given name, so Sir Ambrose Gascoyne is Sir Ambrose to everyone who addresses him, and his wife is Lady Gascoyne. The same holds for a knighted officer such as General Sir Eustace Pelham, who is Sir Eustace. A peer works the other way round: he is known by his title, so Viscount Kettlewell is Lord Kettlewell and his surname is rarely heard.

What is the difference between Lord Julian Netherby and Lord Rushden?

Lord Rushden is a peer, a man who holds a title in his own right and has a seat in the House of Lords. Lord Julian Netherby is the younger son of a duke or a marquess, and the Lord in front of his given name is a courtesy that he cannot pass on to his children. He is Lord Julian in speech and never Lord Netherby.

Are these the names of real people or of characters from the novels?

That is not the intent. The list was drafted from period given names, real English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh surnames and invented titles, and it aims to leave out historical figures and the characters of the famous novels and the television series. With old surnames a match with some real man of the time is always possible, so search a name before you put it in print.
