Generate literary names from classic and well-loved books: Atticus, Scout, Darcy, Heathcliff, Ophelia, Pip, Estella and Ishmael, plus famous pairs like Jo March, Anne Shirley and Jane Eyre, for babies, pets and characters.

About literary names

Literary names carry a story with them. Atticus and Scout come from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Darcy from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Heathcliff from Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, and Pip and Estella from Dickens's Great Expectations. Ishmael opens Melville's Moby-Dick, Dorian Gray belongs to Oscar Wilde, and Huck to Mark Twain.

Unlike the site's invented-name pages, this list draws on names that published novels, poems and plays use. Most entries are a single name. A full name appears where the pair is the famous part: Jo March from Little Women, Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables, Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities, Jane Eyre from the novel that bears her name.

The names are grouped by where they come from: nineteenth-century English novels, American classics, Russian, French and other European fiction (Cosette, Emma Bovary, Anna Karenina), epic and myth as literature retells it (Odysseus, Beowulf, Beatrice), Gothic fiction, children's classics, poetry and drama, detective stories and early novels, and modern classics by given name only. A small share are authors' surnames that parents now use as first names, such as Austen, Bronte, Alcott and Wilde.

How to choose literary names

  • Read the character before you borrow the name. Heathcliff and Estella sound romantic, but both are hard people in their books, and a well-read relative will know it.
  • For a baby, the quieter picks wear best: Elinor, Marianne, Jude, Tess, Phoebe, Atticus, Laurie. For a pet, the big ones are fun: Queequeg, Bagheera, Mr. Toad, Captain Nemo.
  • Use a full name only when the pair is the point. Jo March or Sherlock Holmes makes a fine name for a cat or a boat, while for a child the first name alone is usually enough.
  • Writers naming their own characters should treat a famous name as an allusion, not a disguise. Readers will hear Ahab or Ophelia and expect the echo to mean something.
  • An author's surname honors a writer without tying the name to one character: Austen, Bronte, Keats, Thoreau, Whitman.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good literary names for a baby?

Well-liked choices on this list include Atticus, Scout, Darcy, Elinor, Tess, Jude, Cosette, Beatrice, Holden and Alice. Single given names like these work in everyday life and still point to a book.

Are these real character names or invented ones?

They are names that classic and well-loved published works use, such as Heathcliff, Hester Prynne, Raskolnikov and Anne Shirley, plus a small share of authors' surnames. The list is not an index of all literature, so look up a name's book before you rely on it.

Which literary names suit a pet?

Short, vivid ones: Pip, Huck, Scout, Toto, Baloo, Dinah, Figaro and Gatsby. For a pet with presence try Ahab, Moriarty, Captain Hook or Lady Bracknell.

Why are some entries first names and others full names?

A single name is easier to reuse, so most entries are one word. Where the first name alone would lose the reference, the list keeps the pair, as in Jane Eyre, Tom Sawyer, Dorian Gray and Becky Sharp.
