About hell names

Almost every culture that imagined a hell named it after a place, and the names carry their geography with them. Gehenna is the Greek form of Ge-Hinnom, the valley outside Jerusalem where refuse burned; Tartarus is a pit as far below Hades as earth is below heaven; Naraka in Hindu and Buddhist texts is a stack of hells, each with its own name such as Avici (the waveless) or Raurava (the screaming). The Qur'an gives Jahannam seven gates including Saqar and Jahim, Dante gave his Inferno nine circles and four rivers, and Dungeons & Dragons gave the Nine Hells a layer for each archdevil, from Avernus down to Nessus.

An invented hell name usually sounds right because of one of three moves. The first is a classical or Semitic root with hard consonants: Malebolge, Acheron, Sheol. The second is a plain description of what happens there, which is how the Buddhist hot hells and Xibalba's House of Knives got their names. The third is a bare definite article that refuses to name it at all: the Pit, the Abyss, the Maw.

The list below mixes real hells, underworld regions, rivers and gates with original infernal realms, and adds the rulers and gaolers who govern them, from Mephistopheles and Ereshkigal to original archfiends.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether your hell is a prison, a furnace or a kingdom; prison hells take names like the Adamant Gaol or Ninefold Gaol, furnace hells take Kiln, Pyre and Crucible, and kingdom hells get cities and courts such as Dis or the Molten Court.
  • Real hells are subdivided, so name the layers and not just the whole: a top layer travellers can reach, a middle of rivers and cities, and a deepest pit reserved for the worst, the way Dante, Naraka and the Nine Hells all do it.
  • Pair a realm name with a ruler whose name shares its sound; Phlegethos and its archdevil, or Ishkarrun and Prince Ishmarek, feel like they belong together.
  • For horror or grounded fiction, borrow a real term and localise it (Tophet, Sheol, Duzakh) rather than inventing something that sounds like a video game boss.
  • Avoid stacking infernal adjectives; Brimstone Hollow reads better than Burning Brimstone Hellfire Hollow, and one vivid word per name is plenty.

Are these real names for hell from mythology?

Many are. What is the difference between hell and the underworld?

An underworld is simply where the dead go, and many, like Hades or Sheol, were originally grey and neutral rather than punishing. A hell is specifically a place of judgment and punishment. Later traditions blurred them, which is why Hades, Hel and Gehenna are all translated as hell in English Bibles.

Can I use these names for a D&D or Pathfinder campaign?

Yes. The list includes the canonical Nine Hells layers and several Abyssal and planar locations as reference points, plus hundreds of original realms, pits, citadels and archfiends you can drop into a homebrew cosmology without overlapping published material.

How do I name the ruler of my hell?

Classic devil names come from Hebrew and Latin (Lucifer, Belial, Mammon), Goetic grimoires (Paimon, Stolas, Marchosias) or death gods (Ereshkigal, Yama, Mictlantecuhtli). For an original lord, use a short harsh name plus one title that states the job: Vorn the Gaoler, the Tithe-Collector, Marrow-Queen Isvel.
