Hell's Paradise Name Generator
Convicts, executioners and immortals for Jigokuraku OCs
Generate original character names in the style of Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku. The list has convicts with epithets and home provinces (Kurobe the Grave Fox, Oren of Echigo), executioners such as Yamada Asaemon Kaname and flower-named immortals like Shao Yao and Lady Foxglove.
About Hell's Paradise names
Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku runs on three naming patterns, and this list of 1,000 names leans on all of them. Convicts are known by a name and a reputation: Gabimaru the Hollow, Aza Chobe the Bandit King. Originals work the same way, either with an epithet for the crime or the fighting style (Kurobe the Grave Fox, Okiku the Nine Plates, Tetsuzo the Bell Breaker) or with a home province of old Japan (Oren of Echigo, Hayato of Satsuma).
The executioners all share one name. Yamada Asaemon was a real hereditary name used by a line of sword testers and executioners in Edo, and the series puts a personal name after it, as in Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. The executioners here follow that form, such as Yamada Asaemon Kaname or Yamada Asaemon Hisame, and roughly half of them carry names that read as women's or suit either. Japanese names are in Japanese order, family name first.
The island's immortals are named for flowers. Originals here use Mandarin flower names such as Shao Yao (peony) and Zi Teng (wisteria), Japanese flower words with a title (Sazanka Sennin) and plain English forms (Lady Foxglove). The rest of the list covers shinobi title-names, monks, bandits, ronin, island creatures and places. Names marked (canon) are from the series; the rest are written in its style.
How to choose Hell's Paradise names
- Take the epithet from what the character did or how they fight, not from how they look. The series' own titles, the Hollow and the Bandit King, are reputations other people gave them.
- For an executioner, keep the full Yamada Asaemon and change only the personal name. A calm, slightly old-fashioned one such as Kaname, Hisame or Tessai sits well next to it.
- Use the "of province" form when a convict's home matters to the story, and look at a map of the old provinces first: Echigo is snow country on the Sea of Japan, Satsuma is the far south of Kyushu.
- Give an immortal one flower and choose it for what it suggests. Bi An Hua is the red spider lily of the far shore, and Tan Hua is a bloom that opens for a single night.
- Names marked (canon) belong to characters of the series. Keep them for fan works about those characters and take an unmarked name for your own.
Frequently asked questions
How are Hell's Paradise characters named?
Convicts go by a name plus an epithet or a home, such as Gabimaru the Hollow. Their executioner minders all share the name Yamada Asaemon followed by a personal name, such as Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. The immortals of the island are named for flowers.
Are there names for female Hell's Paradise characters?
Yes, in every format. Women convicts include Okiku the Nine Plates, Omitsu the Honey Poisoner and Oren of Echigo, and swordswomen carry full names such as Kirishima Tae the Glaive Widow. Roughly half of the executioner names, Yamada Asaemon Akane among them, read as women's names or suit either.
Was Yamada Asaemon a real name?
Yes. Yamada Asaemon was a hereditary name passed down a line of sword testers and executioners in Edo-period Japan, and the series builds its executioner clan on it. Every executioner on this list is fictional: the personal names after it are ordinary Japanese names, and none is meant to be a historical person.
Which names come from the series itself?
Only the small share marked (canon), such as Gabimaru the Hollow (canon) and Yamada Asaemon Sagiri (canon). Those belong to the creator and publisher of Hell's Paradise, and this page is a fan resource with no connection to them. The unmarked names are new ones written in the style of the setting.
