Dragonborn City Name Generator
Draconic citadels, clan holds and fallen imperial capitals
Generate dragonborn city names with a harsh Draconic sound: citadels like Djerad Korvath, single-word cities such as Khurzanth and Vorastrix, clan seats like Clanhold Drukhavir, Arkhosian-style capitals such as Vharkosia, and Common names like The Scaled Citadel and Breathgate.
About dragonborn city names
Dragonborn rarely get cities of their own in published D&D, which is exactly why a homebrew one stands out. The best-known examples set the tone. Djerad Thymar, the capital of Tymanther in the Forgotten Realms, is a single enormous citadel raised on pillars. Arkhosia was the ancient dragonborn empire of the fourth edition setting, and Draconia is the dragonborn homeland in Exandria. The first two are short on soft sounds and long on th, kh and hard k, and the clan names in the Player's Handbook are built from the same kind of hard, breathy consonants.
The list follows those models. One block uses Djerad as a citadel word (Djerad Korvath, Djerad Ixanthe). The largest block is single Draconic names such as Khurzanth, Vorastrix and Tharkessh, and another pairs a short particle with a longer word (Kesh Varuun, Vor Akhesh). Because clan matters more to dragonborn than nation, many cities are named as clan seats: Clanhold Drukhavir, Hearth of Clan Ulhavosk, Hall of Earned Names.
For maps that need contrast there are imperial names in the Arkhosian manner (Vharkosia, Tymarathos), Draconic roots with a Common landmark (Khazrith Spire, Vashkel Harbor), plain Common epithets that outsiders would use (The Scaled Citadel, City of Nine Breaths, Tyrantfall), and ruins such as Fallen Kharavosk.
How to choose dragonborn city names
- Give the city two names: the Draconic one its people use and the Common one traders use. Khurzanth to its citizens can be The Hundred Pillars to everyone else.
- Tie the name to a clan. A city called Clanhold Shorrakesh or Clan Morrakh's Ford tells players who holds power there and whom they will need to impress.
- Think vertically. Dragonborn cities in published lore are built as citadels and pyramids instead of sprawling towns, so type words like Spire, Pillar, Terrace, Stair and Aerie fit better than Vale or Meadow.
- Use history as a source. Names such as Tyrantfall, Chainbreak and The Unchained City suit dragonborn who threw off dragon overlords, while Seat of the Golden One suits those who still serve one.
- Say the name aloud before you commit. Draconic names should be harsh but pronounceable; if your players cannot repeat it after hearing it once, shorten it or use the Common epithet at the table.
Frequently asked questions
What are good names for a dragonborn city?
For a Draconic sound try Khurzanth, Vorastrix, Djerad Korvath, Kesh Varuun or Tharkessh. For a clan seat use something like Clanhold Drukhavir or Hearth of Clan Garrukhan. If you want a name in Common, The Scaled Citadel, Breathgate, Fangspire and City of Nine Breaths all read clearly on a map.
Which names in the list come from official D&D settings?
Five are place names from published settings: Djerad Thymar, Djerad Kusold and Tymanther from the Forgotten Realms, Arkhosia from fourth edition, and Draconia from Exandria. About twenty other entries use Player's Handbook clan and personal names whole, such as Kepeshkmolik Hold, Myastan Reach and Djerad Balasar, and more are coined from the same roots. A few Common names point at published lore: the Vayemniri and the Lance Defenders of Tymanther, Bael Turath, and the dragon gods Io, Bahamut and Tiamat. The rest are invented to match that sound.
Why do so many names start with Djerad?
The best-known dragonborn cities in the Forgotten Realms are Djerad Thymar and Djerad Kusold, so players who know the setting read the word as the mark of a citadel city. The list uses it that way in names like Djerad Akhuun and Djerad Pyrrhax. For your own world you can keep it, or swap in a particle of your own such as Kesh, Vor or Thar.
How do I make a city name sound Draconic?
Lean on hard and breathy consonants (k, kh, th, rr, zh, x), double vowels like uu and aa, and endings such as -ax, -esh, -uun and -akh. Avoid soft l and w sounds and gentle endings like -iel or -wyn, which read as elven. Compare Vrakthuun and Ghorastul with any elf city and the difference is clear.
