About fallout tribal names
Fallout's tribals are not one culture but several, and each has its own naming habit. In Honest Hearts the Dead Horses use hyphenated deed-names that read like a sentence fragment (Follows-Chalk, Salt-Upon-Wounds), while the Sorrows prefer quiet two-word nature names like Waking Cloud. Fallout 2's Arroyo mixes short invented names (Sulik, Hakunin, Mynoc, Nagor) with ordinary pre-War names that survived two centuries, so a tribe can have a Cameron standing next to a Klint and nobody blinks.
The other great Fallout tribal tradition is the found-object name: a child named after a word on a faded sign or the thing a parent was carrying, so Nuka, Sparkplug, Hubcap and Typewriter all sound right around a Zion campfire. Tribe names work the same way. Some describe a trait or totem (White Legs, Twisted Hairs, Hangdogs, Crazy Horns), and some are old town names worn smooth by generations of retelling, the way the Fredonians and Kaibabs took theirs from Arizona map dots.
This generator leans on all of those patterns. You will find canon names alongside hundreds of originals in each register, plus tribe and clan names for building your own settlements, Legion back-stories or New Vegas mods. Pick the register that matches where your tribe came from and the name will carry the lore for you.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the style to the tribe's origin: Zion tribes descended from tourists and refugees use deed-names and nature names, while Core Region tribes like Arroyo keep short invented names and a few pre-War holdovers.
- Hyphenated names should describe something the character actually did or does (Runs-From-Geckos, Mends-The-Net); a name with a story behind it is what makes the Dead Horses style work.
- Found-object names land best when the object is mundane and pre-War: Hubcap, Thermos and Sparkplug feel authentic, whereas anything too heroic breaks the effect.
- Build a tribe name from a visible trait, a totem animal or a corrupted place name, then give its members names in one consistent register so the group reads as a single culture.
- For a tribal who has joined the Legion, NCR or a raider gang, keep the tribal name as a surname or nickname so the origin still shows through.
Frequently asked questions
What are the different styles of Fallout tribal names?
There are four main ones: hyphenated deed-names used by the Dead Horses (Follows-Chalk, Salt-Upon-Wounds), two-word nature names used by the Sorrows (Waking Cloud), short invented or pre-War names used by Arroyo and the Core Region tribes (Sulik, Hakunin, Cameron), and found-object names taken from pre-War words and junk (Nuka, Hubcap). This generator includes all four plus tribe names.
Does this generator include canon Fallout tribe names?
Yes. You will see canon tribes such as the Dead Horses, Sorrows, White Legs, Blackfoots, Twisted Hairs, Hangdogs, Kaibabs, Fredonians, Ridgers and Great Khans, and canon characters like Follows-Chalk, Waking Cloud, Sulik and Hakunin, mixed with hundreds of original names written in the same styles.
How do I name my own Fallout tribe?
Start with what outsiders would notice: a body trait (White Legs), a custom (Twisted Hairs), a totem or prey animal (Dead Horses, Gecko Skinners) or the ruin they live in (Under-Dam Folk). Corrupted town names also work well, since the Fredonians and Kaibabs are named after real Arizona places. Then name the members in one consistent register.
Can I use these names for Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 2 or a tabletop game?
Absolutely. The names are written to sound at home in Honest Hearts, Zion, the Mojave and the Fallout 2 Core Region, and they work just as well for Fallout-themed tabletop campaigns, mods and fan fiction set anywhere in the wasteland.
