Fallout Character Name Generator

Fallout character names work because the world stopped in an alternate 1950s and never restarted. Vault dwellers and pre-war ghouls carry ordinary American names of that era (Albert Cole, Amata Almodovar, Moira Brown, Butch DeLoria), and the surnames reflect the melting-pot cities the games are set in: Polish and Italian in Boston, Irish and Latino in California, plain Anglo names in the Capital Wasteland. Two centuries later those names have drifted, and characters born in the wastes often have a single name or a nickname earned on the road: Three Dog, No-bark Noonan, Easy Pete, Trashcan Carla.

Factions add their own systems. The Brotherhood of Steel puts rank first (Elder Lyons, Head Scribe Rothchild, Knight-Captain Durga). The NCR uses real-world military ranks with Californian surnames (Colonel Hsu, Ranger Cortez, Trooper Reyes). Caesar's Legion strips recruits of their birth names and hands out Latin ones (Vulpes Inculta, Legate Lanius, Decanus Severus). Tribals in Zion and Arroyo use descriptive compound names like Follows-Chalk and Waking Cloud, and super mutants and ghouls often go by one word: Marcus, Fawkes, Charon, Tabitha.

The best Fallout names tell you where a character came from before you know anything else. Pick a lane, whether vault, faction, tribe, or drifter, and let the name do the worldbuilding.
