Fallout: New Vegas takes the series' retro-1950s naming and pushes it through a Western filter. The Mojave is cowboy country, so small-town characters in Goodsprings, Primm, and Novac have names that would fit a frontier film: Easy Pete, Sunny Smiles, Doc Mitchell, Cliff Briscoe, No-bark Noonan. Southwestern and Latino surnames (Vargas, Tejada, Delgado, Velasco) show up far more often than in the Boston-set Fallout 4, and characters from the NCR carry Californian names with real military ranks: Colonel Hsu, Chief Hanlon, Ranger Ghost, Trooper Reyes.

Caesar's Legion is the other big naming system. Every recruit gives up his birth name for a Latin one, so the Legion is full of Vulpes Inculta, Legate Lanius, Aurelius of Phoenix, and rank-first names such as Decanus Severus or Centurion Cassius. On the Strip the three casino families each have a style: the Chairmen sound like Rat Pack lounge acts (Benny, Swank, Tommy Torini), the Omertas like old-school mobsters (Big Sal, Nero, Cachino), and the White Glove Society like stuffy aristocrats (Mortimer, Marjorie). Great Khans lean biker-gang, Boomers keep short pre-war names, and Zion tribals use descriptive names like Follows-Chalk.

The Courier is deliberately a blank slate, so a name that fits any of these lanes works. Many players choose something short and Western that sounds good after "Courier" on a Mojave Express manifest.
