Post-apocalyptic names work because they show how a world has changed. Birth certificates burned with everything else, so survivors go by what they do, what they lost or what they look like: Sawbones, Six-Toe Sadie, One-Eye Ruiz. Raiders and warlords take names that advertise violence and scale – Immortan, the People Eater, the Bullet Farmer – while scavengers name themselves after the salvage that keeps them alive: Ratchet, Rivet, Bottlecap Bev, Jerry Can.

A second layer comes from the wreckage of the old world. Words that used to be dull infrastructure become names with weight – Culvert, Pylon, Overpass, Blackout – and radiation and disease supply handles like Geiger, Halflife and Rad-Rot Riley. Religious revival is another common thread in the genre, which is why Old Testament names (Ezekiel, Malachi, Absalom) and virtue names (Mercy, Temperance, Reckoning) sit naturally beside the scrap-metal nicknames; the Fallout series, Mad Max and The Book of Eli all draw on it.

The strongest names combine a hard, physical sound with a hint of story. 'Half-Hand Harlan' tells you about an injury and a reputation; 'Waystation Willa' tells you where to find her. Match the register to the character's role: nomads and drivers get engine and road words, cult leaders get scripture, and children born after the fall often get whatever object was nearest when they were named.
