Raider names in Fallout are almost never real names. The games treat raiders as people who have shed their old identity, so nearly every raider goes by a single-word handle: Slag, Gristle, Cinder, Bosco, Cook-Cook, Motor-Runner. The best ones come from violence (Meathook, Cleaver Jack), junk and machinery (Ratchet, Rebar, Piston, Wingnut), chems and rot (Crank, Fester, Scab), or a physical detail the raider probably did not choose (Half-Face, Red Tourette, One-Eye Ollie). Occasionally a leader keeps a plain name for menace by contrast, like Jared at Corvega or Walter in the Boston Common raiders.

Each gang has its own flavor. Nuka-World's Disciples sound like knives (Nisha, Dixie, Savoy), the Operators sound like mob money (Mags Black, William Black, Lizzie Wyath), and the Pack sound like animals (Mason). New Vegas' Fiends are chem-heads with names like Violet and Driver Nephi; the Great Khans are a biker tribe with a Papa Khan at the top; Fallout 76 adds Appalachian raiders and the bird-themed Blood Eagles. Rust Devils, Forged, and Trappers all take names that echo their gimmick.

A good raider name is short, ugly, and easy to shout across a scrapyard. Two syllables is ideal, and pairing a nickname with a common first name (Chainsaw Charlie, Junkyard Jess) works well for a boss whose crew has known them a while.
