Bard Last Name Generator
Surnames and bynames that sing before the bard does
Generate bard last names that pair with any first name: instrument and voice compounds like Lutewright and Clearthroat, verse names like Halfrhyme, road, tavern and birdsong surnames, earned epithets such as the Twice-Encored and a small share of real poets' bynames.
About bard last names
A bard's last name is rarely inherited. In most fantasy settings it is a stage name, a trade name or something an audience shouted once and never took back, so it can say what the bard plays, how they sound or where they have been. The surnames here stand alone: none is tied to a first name, so any of them can follow the given name you already have.
The list runs through sixteen styles. Instrument compounds (Lutewright, Dronepipe, Harpwick) and voice names (Clearthroat, Quicktongue) say what the bard does. Verse and meter names such as Quickverse, Halfrhyme and Sweetmeter suit poets and lorekeepers. Road, tavern and birdsong surnames (Dustyboot, Taproom, Thrushcall) fit traveling players, and makers' names like Stringwright and Pegturner fit a bard who builds what they play. Halfling, elf, tiefling and dwarf groups are built from ordinary words, and there are epithets with 'the' and bynames with 'of' that replace a surname.
A small share, fewer than thirty, is historical: bynames and family names of real poets, among them the Irish Ó Gnímh and Mac Con Midhe, the Welsh Benfras and Hiraethog, the Old Norse Ormstunga and the German Frauenlob. A few more are real trade surnames from music, such as Sangster, Pfeiffer and Geiger. The rest are fantasy compounds and plain musical words.
How to choose bard last names
- Decide who gave the name. A guild or college gives trade names such as Stringwright or Hymnwright, an audience gives epithets such as the Much-Requested, and a bard who names themselves tends to pick something flattering like Goldenlung.
- Tie the surname to an instrument only if the bard will keep that instrument. A voice, verse or road name (Clearthroat, Sweetmeter, Dustyboot) survives a change of instrument or a lost lute.
- Treat the ancestry groups as flavor, not rules. A halfling can carry Deepdrum and a dwarf can carry Kettlehum if the backstory explains how.
- Keep the historical bynames for settings that borrow from the matching culture: Ormstunga beside Norse given names, Benfras beside Welsh ones, Frauenlob beside German ones.
- Let the name grow in play. Start with a plain surname and let the party award a 'the' epithet after the first performance that goes very well or very badly.
Frequently asked questions
Do bards have last names?
In most fantasy settings a bard's second name is chosen or earned rather than inherited. It can be a stage name (Quickverse), a trade name from an instrument or its making (Lutewright, Pegturner), or a byname given by an audience (the Twice-Encored). An inherited family name works too, and it tells the table what kind of household the bard walked away from.
Which bard last names on the list are real?
Only a small share. Family names of Gaelic poets: Ó Gnímh, Mac Con Midhe, Ó Bruadair and MacMhuirich; bynames of Welsh poets: Benfras, Nanmor, Hiraethog, Gryg and Brydydd Hir; bynames of Old Norse skalds: Ormstunga, Vandræðaskáld, Kolbrúnarskáld and Skáldmær. From the troubadours, trouvères, jongleurs and German singers come Cercamon, Marcabru, Faidit, Riquier, Rutebeuf, Bodel, Muset, de Coucy, de Béthune, Taillefer, Frauenlob, Tannhäuser and der Marner, and Widsith is the wandering poet of an Old English poem. The rest are invented compounds and ordinary words from music, verse, birdsong and the road, apart from a few everyday trade surnames such as Sangster, Pfeiffer and Geiger.
Can I use these surnames for a D&D or Pathfinder bard?
Yes. Most are plain-word compounds in the general style of tabletop fantasy rather than setting names, though any short compound may turn up somewhere in print. The halfling, elf, tiefling and dwarf groups are built from ordinary words, for example Kettlehum, Leafmurmur, Emberhymn and Deepdrum, so they sit comfortably beside the given names in any player's guide.
How do I pair a bard surname with a first name?
Say the two together out loud. A long, ornate given name usually wants a short surname such as Harpwick or Gryg, and a one-syllable given name can carry a longer one such as Longrefrain. Epithets with 'the' and bynames with 'of', like of the Painted Wagon, take the place of a surname rather than follow one.
