About elf last names

Elves in most fantasy settings carry a family name that does more work than a human surname. It tells you the house, the forest, sometimes the whole sub-race. There are four main styles. The first is the translated compound, two English nature words joined together: Silverleaf, Nightbreeze, Moonwhisper, Thornweave. D&D and Warcraft lean on this because players can read the meaning at a glance, and the PHB's own sample surnames (Galanodel, Siannodel, Amakiir) are explicitly given with translations like Moonwhisper and Gemflower.

The second style is the untranslated house name: Liadon, Miritar, Craulnober, Ilphelkiir, or the Sindarin-flavored Caladhren and Ithilvaen. These sound older and more formal, and suit noble families and high elves. The third is the Tolkien patronymic, where -ion means 'son of' (Thranduilion, Fëanorion) and -iel 'daughter of'. Tolkien's elves rarely used surnames at all, preferring epithets like 'of Lórien', so 'of the Greenwood' style names are also authentic. The fourth belongs to dark elves: drow houses such as Baenre and Xorlarrin, and the apostrophe names (Do'Urden, Ael'Theron) that many settings use to mark elven nobility.

Match the surname to the first name. A Quenya-sounding given name with a compound like Oakheart feels like a half-elf or a wood elf; paired with Aerendyl or Ciryandil it reads as pure high elf.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the surname is translated or not. Translated compounds (Moonwhisper, Thornweave) suit wood elves, half-elves and player characters; untranslated house names (Miritar, Caladhren) suit high elves and nobility.
  • Use patronymics for Tolkien-style characters: add -ion for 'son of' (Oropherion) or -iel for 'daughter of', or simply use an epithet like 'of the Greenwood'.
  • For drow, pick a house name (Baenre, Xorlarrin, Auvryndar) and remember that the whole family shares it and the matron's house name outranks any personal achievement.
  • Avoid stacking too many celestial words. One Moon- or Star- surname per party is plenty; try Hollowreed, Kestrelbrook or Lutesong for variety.
  • Say the full name aloud. Elven names should flow, so avoid a hard-stopping surname (Blackthorn) after a hard-stopping first name; pair it with something liquid like Laurelin instead.

Frequently asked questions

Do elves have last names in Tolkien's books?

Mostly no. Tolkien's elves used a given name plus a patronymic (Gil-galad Ereinion, 'scion of kings') or an epithet of place (Haldir of Lórien, Legolas of the Woodland Realm). The -ion ending for 'son of' is the closest thing Middle-earth has to an elven surname.

What are the official D&D elf last names?

The Player's Handbook lists family names such as Amakiir (Gemflower), Amastacia (Starflower), Galanodel (Moonwhisper), Holimion (Diamonddew), Ilphelkiir (Gemblossom), Liadon (Silverfrond), Meliamne (Oakenheel), Nailo (Nightbreeze), Siannodel (Moonbrook) and Xiloscient (Goldpetal). Forgotten Realms adds noble houses like Miritar, Craulnober, Durothil and Starym.

How do drow last names work?

Drow surnames are house names (Baenre, Do'Urden, Xorlarrin, Hun'ett). Every member of the house carries it, ranking is by house rather than individual, and a drow who loses their house loses the name too, which is why exiles like Drizzt are sometimes called 'houseless'.

Can I use these elf surnames for a published story or game?

The original compound and house names here are free to use. Canon names from specific settings, such as Baenre, Sunstrider or Craulnober, belong to their publishers, so treat them as examples rather than names for a commercial project.
