About male fae names

Male fae names carry more weight than the light, flowery names given to garden fairies. The men of the faerie courts are princes, lords, knights and huntsmen, and their names tend to sound old, cold and a little dangerous. Many of the oldest come straight from Celtic myth. Lugh of the Long Arm and Midir belong to the Irish Tuatha Dé Danann, Finvarra is the fairy king of Connacht in Irish folklore, and Arawn rules the otherworld of Annwn in the Welsh Mabinogi, where Gwydion works his magic.

Modern romantasy adds a second layer. Authors coin names such as Rhysand and Cardan from soft consonants and flowing endings, then pair them with a court, a season or a house. This list follows the same conventions with given names like Kierath and Ivoren, house names like Nightwillow and Hollowcrown, and full styles such as Lord of the Autumn Court.

The third convention is the epithet. In many stories the fae guard their true names, so a lord is known only by a title: The Thorn Prince, The Hollow King, Warden of the Hawthorn Gate. Mix the three types freely. A given name for friends, a house name for court records and a title for enemies gives one character real depth.

How to choose male fae names

  • Match the name to the court. Winter and Unseelie lords suit hard sounds and words like rime, thorn and dusk, while Summer and Seelie princes suit brighter names such as Solan or Orelian.
  • Use a title when the true name should stay hidden. An epithet like The Gloaming Lord works in dialogue and keeps the given name back for a later reveal.
  • Say the name aloud with its rank. Prince Kierath or Lord Malric should be easy to pronounce, because readers and players will repeat it often.
  • Borrowing from myth? Read the figure's story first. Arawn, Midir and Gwydion arrive with reputations that informed readers will expect you to honor or deliberately twist.
  • For a tabletop campaign, give each court one naming style so players can tell at once where a stranger's loyalties lie.

Frequently asked questions

What are good male fae names?

Good male fae names sound old and courtly. From this list, try Finvarra, Gwydion, Ivoren Vale, Rhodric Thornfall or a title such as The Antlered Prince. Pick a myth name for an ancient being and an invented one for a character who is entirely your own.

What is the difference between a male fae name and a male fairy name?

Fairy names lean small and playful, built from flowers, dew and light. Fae names in the court tradition are darker and more formal, with Celtic roots, house names and ranks such as prince, lord and knight. If your character is a tall, dangerous courtier and not a winged sprite, a fae name fits better.

Are these names from A Court of Thorns and Roses or The Cruel Prince?

No. The invented names are written in the style of popular romantasy and are not presented as canon from any series. The myth names, such as Lugh, Nuada and Arawn, come from Irish and Welsh tradition and are far older than any novel.

Can a fae lord have a surname?

Yes, though it usually works as a house or court name and not a family name in the human sense. Names like Eskil Winterbourne or Malric Hollowcrown tie a character to a lineage, while a style such as Heir of the Hollow Hills ties him to a place. Use whichever tells your reader more.
