About Unseelie names

The Unseelie Court is the unblessed half of Scottish fairy lore: the sluagh that sweep the dying out of the western sky, Nicnevin riding at Samhain, the redcap in his bloody bonnet, Black Annis in her cave and the baobhan sith who dance men to death. Folklore names them bluntly, often for the harm they do (Jenny Greenteeth, Peg Powler, the shroud-washing Bean Nighe), or with a plain honorific such as Hob, Auld or Black. Modern fae fiction adds a second register: invented names colder than Seelie ones, built on v, th, x and gr with endings like -aith, -oth, -vane and -wyn, so Vyrraith or Ossadyne reads as Unseelie before anyone tells you.

Two conventions keep these names honest. Names are leverage in Faerie, so great Unseelie lords go by titles that name a cruelty or an absence (the Duke of Drowned Candles, the Wardress of Forgotten Names) and hide the true name entirely. And the Unseelie palette is poison, frost and carrion rather than dew and roses: hemlock, yew, henbane, rime, rook and moth make the right surnames.

  • Use hyphenated kennings such as Tooth-Counter or Lamp-Snuffer for household pests and hedge-fae; they sound wrong on a queen but perfect on the thing that sours milk.
  • Name the court before the courtiers. A Court of Rime and Thorn implies a frozen, briar-choked hall, and its members can take surnames that echo it (Rimehollow, Thornwane).
  • If you borrow a real being such as the Nuckelavee, Each-Uisge or Baobhan Sith, keep its folklore rules, since its weaknesses (fresh water, iron, cockcrow) give you ready-made plot mechanics.

What does Unseelie actually mean?

Seelie comes from a Scots word for blessed or happy, so Unseelie means unblessed. In Scottish lowland folklore the Seelie Court were fairies who might help or at worst play tricks, while the Unseelie Court were the malicious host who assaulted travellers at night. Modern fantasy uses Unseelie as shorthand for the dark or winter court of the fae.
