Generate entity names for ghosts, demons, cosmic presences and the unexplained things that haunt horror stories: unpronounceable true names, whispered titles like The Watcher in the Static, paranormal case-file names and investigator designations. Built for horror fiction, analog horror, SCP-style writing, tabletop games and creepypasta.

About entity names

An entity is what you call something when you do not know what it is. Ghost, demon, spirit and god all carry assumptions; entity only says that a thing is present and that it is not you. Good entity names keep that uncertainty, in three registers. The true name is the one almost nobody speaks: a clotted, alien word like Vel'sharoth or Ixquinal. The title is what the people who live with the thing actually say, and it describes behavior rather than appearance: The Watcher in the Static, The Thing That Counts Stairs, Grandmother Hush. The designation is the bureaucratic name an investigator or containment agency files it under: Entity Nightjar, The Carrow Anomaly, Presence Hemlock.

This generator mixes all three, plus the folklore style used for real hauntings (The Blue Lady of Harrow Fell, The Knocker of Ashby Lane), family-style nicknames that make a presence feel horribly domestic (Uncle Hollow, Mother Marrow), collective names for swarms and congregations, and the found-footage register of analog horror, where the entity is named for where it was caught: The Figure on the Trail Camera, The Voice on the Baby Monitor. Give an entity all three and let your characters argue about which is correct.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide what the entity is not before you name it. If it is not a ghost, avoid dead-person names; if it is not a demon, avoid the Latin and Hebrew endings (-iel, -oth, -us) that readers associate with grimoires. Titles like The Hollow Guest keep the category open.
  • Name the behavior, not the body. The Thing That Answers Back or The Footsteps That Stop When You Do tells the reader exactly how the entity will show up in the story without fixing its appearance, which is where the dread lives.
  • Use a designation when your story has an institution in it. Entity Nightjar or Anomaly Kestrel implies files, protocols and people who failed to contain it, and it lets characters talk about the thing without sounding like they believe in it.
  • Domestic nicknames (Grandmother Hush, Uncle Hollow, Little Hush) are the scariest option for stories about families and children, because they suggest the household has already made peace with the presence.
  • For an original true name, keep it to two or three syllables with one unusual cluster (Qorvath, Ghalvedra, Tesh'vakar). A longer name should be balanced by a short title characters actually use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an entity and a ghost or demon?

Ghost implies a dead human, demon implies a religious hierarchy, and both tell the reader what rules apply. Entity is deliberately neutral: it covers poltergeists, cosmic presences, tulpas, glitches in reality and things that have no origin at all. Writers use it when they want the presence to stay unexplained, which is why this generator leans on titles and designations that describe behavior rather than nature.

How do I name an entity for analog horror or a creepypasta?

Analog horror names the thing by the medium it was caught on or the place it appeared: The Face in the Test Pattern, The Caller From the Disconnected Line, The Shadow at the Sleep Study. Pair that with a cold designation (Entity Lowtide, Subject Pale Tenant) used by whichever agency or broadcaster is covering it up. The gap between the clinical name and the unsettling description is the whole effect.

Are these names good for Dead by Daylight, SCP or tabletop horror?

Yes. The designation and case-file styles (The Carrow Anomaly, Presence Hemlock, Incident Widow's Stair) fit SCP Foundation and Delta Green writing, the titles suit Call of Cthulhu and Kult, and the true names work for warlock patrons, haunted-house campaigns and original killers in Dead by Daylight-style fan fiction. All names are original and free to use.

Should my entity have a pronounceable name?

Give it at least one. An unpronounceable true name (Pthaumekh, Vhul'ra-Thep) is fine for a grimoire or a chant, but your characters need something to say under their breath in the hallway, and your readers need something to remember. Most memorable horror entities are known by a short everyday title, and the true name is revealed late, if ever.
