Wraith Name Generator
Cold, hollow names for wraiths and dread spirits
Generate wraith names with real menace: hissing single names like Vaelmoras and Kezrathis, titled undead such as Sithrik the Unburied, legend-style epithets like the Wraith of Caer Ulm, and Scots and Gaelic-flavored shades for folklore settings.
About wraith names
A wraith is not a gentle ghost. The word is Scots, first recorded in the 1500s for an apparition that appears as an omen of death, and fantasy has sharpened it into something colder: a spirit hollowed out by hatred, oath or curse that drains the living. Wraith names should carry that chill. The strongest ones avoid soft, rounded sounds and lean on sibilants, hard consonants and long dark vowels: Vaelmoras, Kezrathis, Ashkaroth, Skarnvael. Say one aloud and it should sound like a hiss through teeth.
The second great pattern is the remembered name with a broken title. Wraiths were people once, and the tragedy is in the gap between who they were and what they are: Sithrik the Unburied, Haldrek the Oathbroken, Ulric Sable, Once a Prince. Tolkien's Nazgûl, who lost their names entirely, show the extreme version; a wraith known only as the Ninth Watchman or the Hanged Knight of Dunmere has been reduced to its role and place.
Folklore wraiths are named by the place they haunt and the way they appear: the Wraith of Caer Ulm, the Lady in the Weir, the Grey Man o' the Brae, the Tollkeeper of Blackwater Bridge. This register suits horror campaigns and Gothic fiction where the dead are local and remembered. Mix all three for range.
How to choose wraith names
- Decide what the wraith lost. A name that hints at the life before (Once a Prince, the Oathbroken, the Unburied) gives players and readers a mystery to pull on.
- Use hard, hissing phonology for feral or ancient wraiths (Kezrathis, Ghaztaroth) and faded human names with cold surnames (Elspeth Craw, Odmund Frostgrave) for wraiths that still half-remember themselves.
- Anchor folklore wraiths to a place: a ford, a weir, a bridge, a bell tower. The Wraith of the Salt Road is scarier than a wraith with no address.
- Keep titles to one per name. Lord Veskarn, Dread Wraith of Sarn works; stacking three honorifics turns menace into parody.
- For D&D or Pathfinder, name the wraith differently from the person it was, and reveal the original name as a plot beat when the party finds the grave or the record.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a wraith and a ghost?
Ghost is the broad word for any spirit of the dead. A wraith, in both Scots folklore and modern fantasy, is a darker, more dangerous kind: an omen of death, or a hollow spirit driven by malice or a curse that can harm or drain the living. Wraith names are therefore colder and more threatening than typical ghost names.
What are good wraith names for D&D?
Use a hissing invented name for the monster (Vorrathiel, Kezrathis, Nyxathor) or a titled former person for a named villain (Sithrik the Unburied, Lady Isilde of the Cold Stair, the Hanged Knight of Dunmere). Wraiths in 5e are often former warriors or nobles, so a lost title fits the lore.
Where does the word wraith come from?
It first appears in Scots in the early 1500s meaning an apparition or a double seen as a death omen; its deeper origin is uncertain. Tolkien's Ringwraiths made it a standard fantasy term for a corrupted, undying spirit, and D&D and video games followed.
Can I use these names for a character, game or story?
Yes. All the names are free to use for tabletop campaigns, fiction, games and usernames. Canon names from published settings are not included, so nothing here belongs to an existing franchise.
