About Backrooms names

Backrooms fiction grew out of a single image post from 2019: an empty office space with yellow wallpaper, damp carpet and buzzing fluorescent lights, which you reach by slipping, or noclipping, out of ordinary reality. Fans built the rest, and the naming habits they settled on are plain on purpose. A level is called what it looks like. An entity gets a flat plural noun, the way the community's Smilers and Hounds do. The flatter the name, the more uneasy it reads.

This list follows those habits with new names. Level titles describe ordinary places gone wrong, such as The Flooded Car Park, School at Night and Airport Gate, No Flights. Nicknamed levels follow the Poolrooms pattern (The Tilerooms, The Fogrooms) or borrow a sign or a phrase (Staff Only, Please Hold). Entities are plural nouns for something that does one small thing: Window Watchers, Step Counters, The Nodders. Wanderer groups and outposts sound practical and a little homemade, like Outpost Kettle and The Chalk Arrow Society, and found objects copy the Almond Water recipe, a harmless item that matters more than it should: Pear Water, Hallway Chalk, Blank Key.

None of the levels carries a number. Numbers belong to whichever wiki or project you write for, so add yours once you know the slot is yours.

How to choose Backrooms names

  • Name a level after the most boring true thing about it. The Photocopier Floor is more unsettling than anything with doom in the title, because the reader supplies the dread.
  • Give an entity one habit and name it for that habit: Tile Counters count, Back Turners never face you. One rule per entity is easier to write, and easier to fear, than a list of powers.
  • Pair names across the groups to build a whole entry: a level (The Drained Swimming Hall), what lives there (Pool Floaters), who camps there (Outpost Dry Socks) and what can be found (Warm Ice).
  • Leave the numbering to your own project. If you post to a community wiki, look through its list for a free slot, and for a level that already uses your title, before you publish.
  • Keep it uneasy rather than gory. The setting works on empty space, humming lights and the feeling that someone has just left the room.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Backrooms level names?

Plain descriptions of familiar places that are slightly off. From this list: The Empty Food Court, Stairwell Going Down, The Library With Blank Spines and Hotel Pool After Midnight. Nicknames in the Poolrooms manner, such as The Carpetrooms or The Steamrooms, suit levels that fans would shorten anyway.

How are Backrooms entities named?

Mostly with a simple plural noun, sometimes hyphenated, that says what the thing does or looks like. The list keeps to that pattern with names like Light Eaters, The Hushers, Footstep Thieves and Wallpaper Moths. Skip Latin and grand titles: the matter-of-fact tone is what makes the setting read like a field guide.

Are these names taken from the Backrooms wikis?

No. They are new names written in the community's style, and none is numbered like a wiki entry. The wikis are large and change every day, so a match by coincidence is possible: search the wiki you write for before you use a name there.

Can I use these for a Backrooms game or roleplay?

Yes. Level names make map and chapter titles, entity names fill a bestiary, outposts and groups give players somewhere to go and someone to meet, and the object names work as pickups. The wanderer names, such as Cartographer Imre and "Low Battery" Sam, are there for player characters and NPCs.
