About creepypasta names

Creepypasta is horror written for the internet: short, shareable stories that spread through forums like 4chan's /x/ board, Reddit's r/nosleep, and the Creepypasta Wiki from about 2007 onward. Its most famous creations (Slender Man, Jeff the Killer, The Rake, Ben Drowned, Candle Cove, The Russian Sleep Experiment) show how the genre names things. Titles are usually plain: a character's name plus what they do, an ordinary noun with 'The' in front, or a fake file name that suggests a cursed download.

A few patterns dominate. Entities get flat descriptive titles (The Rake, The Expressionless, The Smiling Man) or a first name plus a chilling epithet (Jeff the Killer, Eyeless Jack, Laughing Jack). Cursed-media stories borrow file extensions and version numbers (Sonic.exe, Suicidemouse.avi, Pokémon Black Version) or claim to be lost episodes of real shows. Nosleep-style stories use long first-person titles that sound like a confession or a warning: 'My Grandmother's Rules', 'I Work the Night Shift at a Gas Station', 'Don't Look at the Ceiling'. Ritual pastas name a game (The Elevator Game, The Midnight Man). Japanese urban legends (Kuchisake-onna, Hasshaku-sama, Kisaragi Station) crossed into the genre and kept their original names.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Understate. The scariest creepypasta names are the plainest: The Rake, Room 7, The Neighbor With Two Faces. Save the adjectives for the story.
  • For a killer or OC, use a normal first name plus one defining detail: Eyeless Jack, Ticci-Toby, Wide-Eyed Amy. The genre's most-shared characters almost all follow this shape.
  • For cursed-media stories, pick a real file extension or edition (.exe, .avi, .wav, 'Version') and a familiar franchise-adjacent word; do not use a real trademarked title if you plan to publish outside fan spaces.
  • For nosleep-style posts, write the title as a first-person sentence with a rule or a confession in it. 'There Were Only Three of Us' invites the reader to count.
  • Avoid names already claimed by famous pastas (Slender Man, Jeff the Killer, Herobrine) for your own characters; the community treats them as canon and will call it a copy.
