About spirit names
Spirit names in folklore tend to describe a job or a place rather than a person. The Slavic domovoi is literally the house one, the Roman genius loci the spirit of the place, the Scottish bean nighe the washer-woman at the ford. Names like the Keeper of the Ford or the Lantern in the Fen follow the same logic: they tell you where the spirit lives and what it does, which is usually all that the living ever learn. Personal names appear only when a spirit is close to human, like the apsara Urvashi, the oread Echo or the sprite Ariel.
The sound of an invented spirit name should match its element and temper. Airy and watery spirits suit soft consonants and long vowels (Lumenara, Ondine, Sylvaine); earth and hearth spirits take short, homely names (Hob, Tomte, Goodwife Ember); shades and restless dead lean on hushed sounds (Wistmere, Mournwell, Umbriel). A spirit bound to a family often carries an old-fashioned human name with a mood word attached: Mercy Fallow, Silence Weir, Obadiah Rooke.
This generator mixes named spirits from Celtic, Norse, Slavic, Japanese, Greek, Hindu, African and Filipino tradition with original names in each of those registers, so you can match a spirit to its setting or borrow a pattern for a culture of your own.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide what the spirit is attached to first (a hearth, a river, a person, a grudge) and let the name point at it. Spirits of place work best with descriptive titles; spirits of people take personal names.
- Keep folklore names in their own setting. A domovoi in a Norwegian farmhouse or a kodama in a Welsh wood will read as a mistake to anyone who knows the sources.
- For a guardian or companion spirit, pair a short given name with a place phrase (Orla of the Birch Grove, Corvin of the Rooks). It sounds bound and specific rather than generic.
- Use kin titles (Granny Hawthorn, Brother Rime, Aunt Eglantine) for household spirits that families appease with offerings; it captures how people actually spoke to them.
- If the spirit is meant to be frightening, do not name it plainly. The Woman Who Counts the Tide is scarier than any coined word because it implies a rule the reader does not yet understand.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a spirit and a ghost?
A ghost is the spirit of a specific dead person, so it usually keeps a human name or a description of how it died. Spirit is the broader word: it covers nature spirits, household spirits, elementals, guardian spirits and daimones that were never human at all. This generator focuses on that wider group, with a ghost name generator available separately.
What are some famous spirit names from folklore?
Ariel and Puck from English tradition, the domovoi and rusalka of Slavic lore, the Norse huldra and nisse, the Japanese kodama and zashiki-warashi, the Irish banshee, the Greek daimon Agathodaemon, the Hindu apsara Urvashi and the Filipino diwata are all well known. Many of the best-known spirits are types rather than individuals, which is why folklore names so often read like job titles.
How do I name a nature or elemental spirit?
Pick the element and let its sounds lead. Water and air spirits suit flowing names with l, s and long vowels (Lumenara, Sylvaine, Zephyrelle); fire spirits take sharper sounds (Pyralis, Cinderwake, Flintember); earth spirits are short and grounded (Hob, Sedgecap, Petrine). Adding a place phrase (Maelis of the Tide Pools) makes the spirit feel bound to a single spot.
Can I use these spirit names for a D&D character or a novel?
Yes. The folklore spirits are public domain and the original names are free to use. For a player character, the kin-title names and name-plus-place names work well for a spirit companion, familiar or warlock patron; the descriptive titles suit unnamed hauntings the party has to investigate.
