Generate Enochian names for occult fiction, tabletop celestials and fan-made angels: names recorded in John Dee's tables, such as Carmara, Bataivah, Occodon and Madimi, plus names coined for fiction from recorded Enochian words, like Rorvep and Vabzir Ror.

About Enochian names

Enochian is the name later writers gave to the angelic language that John Dee and Edward Kelley set down in the 1580s. Kelley described what he saw and heard, and Dee filled notebooks with letter tables, calls in the language and lists of angels. Most names were read off grids of letters rather than built from roots, which is why they look like nothing else: Bataivah, Iczhihal, Edlprnaa. They rarely follow the -el and -iah pattern of Hebrew angel names.

A little under half of this list is read from Dee's records, in the spellings most printed editions use: nineteen of the thirty Aethyrs (Lil, Zax), their ninety-one governors (Occodon, Pascomb), the forty-nine good angels of the Heptarchy, whose names all begin with B, with Carmara and Hagonel set over them, the kings and seniors of the four Watchtowers, the Sons and Daughters of Light and their children (Madimi, Ave), spirits who speak in the diaries (Nalvage, Galvah) and a few letter names such as Drux.

The rest is coined for fiction and is attested nowhere. Single words from the calls stand as names (Vovin, dragon; Vabzir, eagle). Compounds join two recorded words: Rorvep is ror, sun, plus vep, flame. There are also two-word names, names with an Aethyr byname, ranked names and orders such as Order of the Hubaro.

How to choose Enochian names

  • Decide first whether you want a recorded figure or a new one. Carmara, Lexarph and Bataivah already hold a place in Dee's system; a coined name such as Rorvep or Graazong leaves you free to invent the character.
  • Agree on a pronunciation and keep it. Dee noted how some words of the calls were spoken, but there is no full guide to the table names, so a group has to settle how it says Iczhihal or Lsrahpm.
  • Name a group with a shared pattern. A court of B names (Bobogel, Bornogo, Befafes) reads as one household, and coined names that share a root, such as Rorvep, Raasror and Busdror, read as one choir.
  • Keep one spelling through a whole story. Dee's u and v are a single letter and editions differ by a letter here and there, so Avtotar also turns up as Autotar.
  • Use the list as language and lore for stories and games. It gives no ritual use and makes no claim about what any name does.

Frequently asked questions

What is Enochian?

Enochian is the later name for the angelic language recorded by John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 1580s, first in England and then on the Continent. Kelley acted as the seer and Dee wrote down the letter tables, the calls and the lists of angel names. Dee himself called the language Angelical.

Which names here are from Dee's records and which are coined?

Names such as Occodon, Carmara, Bobogel, Hagonel, Bataivah, Laidrom, Madimi and Lil come from Dee's tables and diaries. Coined names are the single call words used as names (Vovin, Luciftias), the compounds (Rorvep, Zongvabzir), the two-word names (Vabzir Ror, Upaah Zong), anything with a byname or a rank (Vepgraa of Zen, Governor Zongmoz) and every order, such as Choir of Luiahe. The coined names are built only from recorded Enochian words, but nobody recorded them as names.

What are the thirty Aethyrs?

In Dee's system the Aethyrs, which he called Aires, are thirty regions that run from Lil, the first, to Tex, the thirtieth. In order they are Lil, Arn, Zom, Paz, Lit, Maz, Deo, Zid, Zip, Zax, Ich, Loe, Zim, Uta, Oxo, Lea, Tan, Zen, Pop, Chr, Asp, Lin, Tor, Nia, Uti, Des, Zaa, Bag, Rii and Tex. Nineteen stand alone in this list and seven more appear as bynames, as in Zongpir of Tor.

Are the spellings exact?

They follow the forms most printed editions give, and those editions do not always agree. Dee wrote u and v as one letter and the manuscripts vary, so Saiinov is also printed Saiinou and a governor may differ by a letter from one book to the next. For fiction, pick one form and keep it.
