Generate fantasy language names for your worldbuilding: demonym-style tongues like Vasharin and Thessic, layered historical forms like Old Vael and High Sarran, and trade cants, creoles and liturgical scripts. Useful for novels, D&D campaigns, conlangs and video game lore.
About language names
Real languages are named in only a handful of ways, and fictional ones read as real when they follow the same habits. Most language names are demonyms with a suffix: English, Spanish, Swahili, Japanese, Latin. So a people called the Vashari speak Vasharin, the Thess speak Thessic, and the Kaldri speak Kaldrian. A second pattern layers time and register on top of that: Old Vael, Middle Aurenne, High Sarran, Low Kessic, Classical Orune. Old, High and Classical signal prestige and age; Low, Common and Vulgate signal the street.
The third pattern names a language by what it is for or who speaks it rather than by a nation: Thieves' Cant, Trade-Tongue, Sailor's Lingua, Pilgrim's Koine, Jadewind Creole. These suit a setting where species or guilds matter more than borders. Finally there are endonyms, the name speakers use for their own speech, which often just means 'the words' or 'the speech of people' in that language: Tsavakhu, Ny'Thossa, Qel Ashar, Oruk-Tha.
A language name has two jobs: it must be easy to say in a sentence ('she answered in Drethani') and it must sound like it belongs to its speakers. If your elves have liquid names full of l and th, their language should too; if your dwarves are all k and r, call their speech Kharzak, not Ellawen.
Tips for choosing a name
- Derive the language name from the people's name the way real languages do: the Norrask speak Norrask or Norraskan, not something unrelated. Readers will remember it instantly.
- Give a long-lived culture at least two forms (Old Vael and Vael, Classical Orune and Orune) so scholars, priests and commoners can speak differently and old inscriptions can feel old.
- Name trade and underworld languages after their function: Saltmouth, Under-Road Pidgin, Caravan Lingua. Nobody calls a pidgin by a grand demonym.
- Use one apostrophe or hyphen at most per name, and only for languages whose speakers' names also use them; Ny'Thossa fits a world with Qel Ashar, not a world with Pellorese.
- Say the name in a sentence before committing: 'The letter was written in Hollowtongue' should sound like dialogue, not a fantasy catalogue.
Frequently asked questions
How are real-world languages named, and can I copy that?
Yes, and you should. Most real language names are the people's name plus -ish, -ese, -ian, -ic, -i or -an (Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, German), some are named for a place (Latin from Latium), and a few use descriptive or register words (Old English, High German, Low German, Swiss German, Haitian Creole). Fantasy names that follow those patterns read as real without further explanation.
Do I need to invent the whole language to use one of these names?
No. Most published fantasy only needs a name, a sound (a few sample words or names for characters and places), and a sense of who speaks it. A name like Drethani and a handful of consistent-sounding words will carry a whole novel; a full conlang is only worth building if the language itself is on the page a lot.
What is the difference between a cant, a pidgin, a creole and a koine?
A cant or argot is the secret slang of a group (thieves, traders, soldiers). A pidgin is a simplified contact language nobody speaks natively; when children grow up speaking it natively it becomes a creole. A koine is a common dialect that spreads across a region as a shared standard, the way Koine Greek did. Using the right word gives your setting a realistic linguistic texture.
Can I use these names in a published book or game?
Yes. All the names here are original or generic descriptive terms, not taken from trademarked properties, and they are free to use in commercial fiction, tabletop supplements and video games. If you need to be certain a name is unique, search it before publishing.
