About angel names

Angel names in the Western tradition follow one dominant pattern: a Hebrew word or phrase joined to -el, meaning "God." Michael asks "Who is like God?", Raphael means "God heals," and Uriel means "God is my light." A second family of names ends in -iah or -yah, a shortened form of the divine name, and these are typical of the seventy-two Kabbalistic angels such as Nemamiah, Haziel, and Mebahiah. Because the structure is so regular, angel names have a recognizable sound: three or four syllables, soft consonants, and a closing "el" or "ah."

The sources are richer than most people expect. Scripture names only Michael and Gabriel (and Raphael in the Book of Tobit). The Book of Enoch adds the seven archangels and the two hundred Watchers, including Kokabiel, Shamsiel, and Baraqiel. Medieval Jewish mysticism produced angels of natural forces — Matariel for rain, Shalgiel for snow, Ruhiel for wind. Islamic tradition contributes Jibril, Mikail, Israfil, and Azrael, plus the questioning angels Munkar and Nakir. Modern usage has turned several into everyday given names: Gabriella, Michaela, Ariel, Nathaniel, and Seraphina.

A good angel name should match the being's role and rank. Chief angels usually take the classic biblical or Enochian names, while lesser messengers, guardians, and choirs suit the longer Kabbalistic forms. For a warmer or more human character, the feminine and Romance-language variants (Angelica, Rafaela, Serafino) work well.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick by role: Michael and Camael for warriors, Raphael and Seheiah for healers, Gabriel and Malakhi for messengers, Raziel and Vretil for scribes and secret-keepers.
  • Keep the Hebrew ending consistent — an angel choir named Nuriel, Tahariel, and Kokabiel sounds unified, while mixing in Latin or Greek forms breaks the illusion.
  • For a female angel character, use an established feminine form (Gabriella, Ariella, Seraphina, Uriela) instead of bolting -a onto any name; some like Michaela and Raphaela are real given names.
  • If you want the name to feel unfamiliar, choose from the seventy-two Kabbalistic angels (Hakamiah, Nith-Haiah, Yeialel) — most readers won't have seen them before.
  • Avoid Watcher names such as Azazel, Samael, and Shamsiel for benevolent characters; in the source texts they are the rebels.

Frequently asked questions

How many angels are named in the Bible?

Only two by name in the Protestant canon: Michael and Gabriel. Raphael appears in the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit, and Uriel, Raguel, Sariel, and Remiel come from the Book of Enoch.

What are good female angel names?

Traditional angel names are grammatically masculine in Hebrew, but Ariel, Muriel, Lailah, Haniel, and Anael are commonly used for female characters, and Seraphina, Gabriella, Michaela, Evangeline, and Celeste are established feminine given names with angelic meaning.

Can I use these angel names for a baby?

Yes. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Ariel, Nathaniel, Adriel, Uriel, and Ezekiel are all in regular use as given names, and Malak, Malakai, and Angelo are popular in Arabic-, Hawaiian-, and Italian-speaking communities.

Are these names free to use in my book or game?

Yes. Angel names come from ancient religious and mystical texts and are not owned by anyone, so you can use them freely in commercial fiction, games, and other projects.
