Generate occult names for characters, aliases and stories: Victorian-gothic occultist names, Latin magical mottos, Goetic and Qabalistic spirit names, alchemical titles and tarot-inspired epithets for anyone working in the hidden arts.
About occult names
Occult names come from a few recognizable traditions, and the right one depends on what you are naming. Nineteenth-century ceremonial magicians took Latin mottos as initiate names, written Frater or Soror plus a phrase: Perdurabo, Sapere Aude, Lux e Tenebris. Grimoire traditions supply spirit names with a particular sound: the Goetia's Vassago, Marchosias and Dantalion; Gnostic and Qabalistic sources add Abraxas, Thaumiel and the sephiroth. Alchemy contributes stage names like Nigredo, Azoth and Caput Mortuum, and tarot gives ready-made epithets such as the Hanged Man or the High Priestess. Layered on top is the fictional occultist: a gothic given name paired with an English surname that sounds like a churchyard (Lucretia Ashgrave, Silas Harrowgate).
This generator mixes all of those. You will find full character names for occult detectives, cult leaders and parlor mediums; Frater and Soror mottos for magical orders; stand-alone Latin phrases that work as aliases or society names; spirit-and-surname combinations for a modern practitioner who took a Goetic name; poison-plant and sabbat names for witchy characters; and place names for haunted halls and lodges.
Pick by register. Latin mottos suit ritual magic and secret societies, gothic full names suit fiction, and the single mystical words make good usernames, pen names and coven handles.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide whether the name is public or secret. Occultists historically had an everyday name and a motto used only inside the lodge; giving a character both instantly suggests a hidden life.
- Latin mottos should be short and grammatically plausible. Two or three words (Lux in Tenebris, Soror Veritas) read as authentic; a full sentence reads as a fantasy novel.
- Gothic full names work best when the surname is a real-sounding English, French or German name with a dark association: Ashgrave, Harrowgate, Saint-Cyr, Helsing. Avoid stacking two invented dark words.
- For a practitioner who took a spirit's name, pair a Goetic or Qabalistic name with a plain surname (Stolas Moth, Binah Vale) rather than another exotic word; the contrast is what makes it unsettling.
- Check the meaning before you commit. Many of these terms are real religious or esoteric vocabulary, so look up any you plan to use for a shop, handle or published work.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound occult?
Three things do most of the work: Latin (especially words for light, shadow, key, door, star and truth), references to real esoteric systems such as the Goetia, Qabalah, alchemy and tarot, and the gothic pairing of an old-fashioned first name with a grave-sounding surname. Names that borrow from actual traditions feel more authentic than invented dark-fantasy words.
What is a magical motto?
A magical motto is a Latin phrase taken as an initiate name in ceremonial orders such as the Golden Dawn, prefixed with Frater (brother) or Soror (sister). Famous historical examples include Perdurabo (I shall endure) and Sapere Aude (dare to know). The list includes original mottos in that style; if you want your own, pick a short phrase that states an aspiration.
Can I use these names for a witch, warlock or cult character?
Yes. The gothic full names suit occult detectives, mediums, cult leaders and grimoire collectors; the plant, sabbat and moon names suit witches; and the Latin and Qabalistic names suit warlocks, ceremonial magicians and secret societies. For more specialized lists, see the witch, warlock and cultist generators linked below.
Are any of these names real people?
No. All of the full character names are invented. Spirit names such as Vassago or Dantalion and terms such as Azoth or Thaumiel come from historical grimoires and esoteric texts rather than from any living person.
