Generate seraphim names built the way angelic names are actually built: a Hebrew root for a divine attribute plus the suffix -el ('of God'). Drawn from Isaiah, Enoch, the Kabbalistic hierarchies, and medieval angelologies, with new names formed on the same pattern for fiction, games, and worldbuilding.

About seraphim names

The seraphim appear in Isaiah 6 as six-winged beings who cry 'Holy, holy, holy' around the throne; the Hebrew word saraph means 'burning one'. Later tradition placed them at the top of the angelic hierarchy and gave them individual names: Seraphiel as their prince, Metatron and Sandalphon in Kabbalistic texts, Kemuel and Jehoel in Enochic literature, and Nathanael in medieval lists. Almost every angel name in the Western tradition ends in -el ('God') or occasionally -iah/-yah, attached to a Hebrew word for what the angel is or does: Rapha-el 'God heals', Uri-el 'God is my light', Nuri-el 'fire of God', Lahabi-el 'flame of God'.

That structure is what makes seraph names easy to build and easy to spot. Take a Hebrew noun for holiness, fire, light, mercy, judgment, or song, and add -el or -iel: Kedushiel (holiness), Eshiel (fire), Zohariel (radiance), Rahamiel (compassion), Shiriel (song). The result reads as an authentic angelic name because it uses the same grammar the medieval angelologists used.

Alongside names attested in Enoch, the Zohar, and the pseudo-Dionysian hierarchy, this list includes new names coined on the classic pattern, plus a few forms from adjacent orders (Hashmal, Chayyiel, Erelim, Tarshish) that suit a full celestial court in a novel or a Diablo-style game.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Almost all angelic names end in -el or -iel; if you invent your own, start with a Hebrew word (esh 'fire', ohr 'light', kavod 'glory') and add the suffix.
  • Seraphim are associated with fire and burning, so names built on fire, flame, radiance, and holiness (Nuriel, Lahabiel, Zohariel, Kedushiel) fit best; save healing and mercy names for lower choirs or archangels.
  • Give your seraph a single office or attribute that its name means, and let that define how it acts; the meaning is the whole point of the naming tradition.
  • For fallen or corrupted seraphim, keep the -el ending but choose a darker root, or drop the -el entirely to show separation from God, as tradition does with Satan and Beelzebub.
  • Feminine forms are rare in the source texts, so use Seraphina, Serapha, or Lailah when you want a name that reads as female to modern audiences.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the seraphim?

Scripture names none individually, but later tradition names Seraphiel as their chief, and lists Metatron, Sandalphon, Kemuel, Jehoel, Nathanael, Uriel, and Michael among the seraphim depending on the source.

Why do angel names end in -el?

El is a Hebrew word for God, so a name like Rapha-el means 'God heals' and Uri-el means 'God is my light'. The pattern comes from biblical Hebrew personal names and was extended by later writers to angels.

Are seraphim the same as archangels?

No. In the traditional nine-choir hierarchy, seraphim are the highest order closest to God, while archangels are the second-lowest, though certain figures such as Michael are sometimes counted in both.

Can I use these names for a character or game?

Yes. Names from Enoch, the Zohar, and medieval angelologies are public domain, and coined names on the -el pattern are original to you.
