Earth Name Generator

Earth is the only planet whose name is not a god: it is just the Old English word for soil, eorthe, and every language has its own equivalent (Erde, Tierra, Zemlya, Bhumi, Chikyu). That is why writers who want the planet to feel strange, ancient or far in the future almost never call it Earth. They reach for the Latin Terra or Tellus, the Greek Gaia, the Norse Midgard, or they let the word decay, as Gene Wolfe did with Urth and Gary Gygax did with Oerth.

The register tells the reader where they are. Terra, Holy Terra and Sol III signal a spacefaring civilization that names worlds by catalogue; Old Earth, Earth That Was and the Cradle are what colonists call a homeworld they have lost; Earth-616, Earth-Two and Counter-Earth mark a multiverse; Gaia, Terra Mater and Pachamama evoke the living planet as a goddess; and alien tongues get invented names like Zhol-Tekhra or an epithet such as the Noisy Planet, because radio is what Earth would look like from outside.

This generator gathers all of those strands: names actually used in fiction and scripture, real-language words for earth and world, translation-style Latin epithets, sci-fi catalogue designations, and plausible invented forms you can give to your own aliens, colonists or far-future survivors.
