Generate alternate names for planet Earth: classical and mythic names like Terra, Gaia, Tellus and Midgard, sci-fi designations such as Sol III and Earth Prime, far-future corruptions like Urth, and the word for earth in dozens of real languages.

About earth names

Earth is the only planet whose name is not a god: it is just the Old English word for soil, eorthe, and every language has its own equivalent (Erde, Tierra, Zemlya, Bhumi, Chikyu). That is why writers who want the planet to feel strange, ancient or far in the future almost never call it Earth. They reach for the Latin Terra or Tellus, the Greek Gaia, the Norse Midgard, or they let the word decay, as Gene Wolfe did with Urth and Gary Gygax did with Oerth.

The register tells the reader where they are. Terra, Holy Terra and Sol III signal a spacefaring civilization that names worlds by catalogue; Old Earth, Earth That Was and the Cradle are what colonists call a homeworld they have lost; Earth-616, Earth-Two and Counter-Earth mark a multiverse; Gaia, Terra Mater and Pachamama evoke the living planet as a goddess; and alien tongues get invented names like Zhol-Tekhra or an epithet such as the Noisy Planet, because radio is what Earth would look like from outside.

This generator gathers all of those strands: names actually used in fiction and scripture, real-language words for earth and world, translation-style Latin epithets, sci-fi catalogue designations, and plausible invented forms you can give to your own aliens, colonists or far-future survivors.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the name by who is speaking. A starship registry says Sol III or Terra; a nostalgic colonist says Old Earth or the Cradle; a priestess says Gaia or Terra Mater; an alien says something unpronounceable or an epithet like the Speaking Rock.
  • For a far-future setting, corrupt the word rather than replacing it: Urth, Erth, Yrth and Aerth all read as Earth worn down by millennia, which quietly tells the reader how much time has passed.
  • Real-language words (Jorden, Dunia, Whenua, Bhumi, Diqiu) work well when one culture dominates the future you are describing, and they sound exotic to readers who do not speak the language.
  • Use Latin epithets sparingly. One Terra Nova or Terra Invicta in a setting is evocative; a map full of Terra-something reads as a list.
  • If your story has multiple Earths, give the home version a plain name (Earth Prime, Earth-One, True Earth) and let the variants carry descriptive ones like Drowned Earth or Mirror Earth so readers can keep them straight.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common alternate names for Earth in fiction?

Terra is by far the most common, especially in space opera and Warhammer 40,000 (Holy Terra). Gaia, Tellus, Sol III, Earth Prime, Old Earth and Midgard follow close behind, and comics use numbered variants such as Earth-616 and Earth-Two.

Why is Earth not named after a god like the other planets?

The other planets were named by Greek and Roman astronomers who saw them as wandering lights in the sky. Earth was the ground under their feet, so every language simply used its word for soil or land, and English kept eorthe, which became Earth.

What does Earth mean in other languages?

Most names mean ground, soil or land: Latin Terra and Tellus, Greek Gaia, German Erde, Spanish Tierra, Russian Zemlya, Sanskrit Bhumi and Prithvi, Swahili Dunia, Maori Whenua. Chinese Diqiu and Japanese Chikyu literally mean earth-sphere.

Can I use these names for my own sci-fi or fantasy world?

Yes. Mythological names, real words and generic designations like Sol III are free to use. Names tied to one franchise, such as Earth-616 or Erde-Tyrene, are best treated as references rather than reused as your own setting's name.
