About planet with meanings names
Real planets and moons are almost never named at random. The eight planets carry the names of Roman gods, the moons of Uranus are Shakespearean characters, and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are lovers, nymphs and Titans from Greek myth. Bright stars keep Arabic names given by medieval astronomers – Aldebaran means 'the follower', Fomalhaut 'the mouth of the fish', Algol 'the demon's head'. Fictional planets that feel real tend to borrow the same sources: Latin and Greek roots, mythological figures, and older words for earth, sky, fire and sea.
The list above pairs each name with the meaning behind it. Some are straight Latin (Ferrum, iron; Gelida, frozen), some are Greek personifications (Ananke, necessity; Aletheia, truth), and some are mythical lands from around the world (Aztlan, Shambhala, Tir na nOg). Suffixes such as Prime, Nova, Minor and Secundus follow astronomical convention and let one root name populate a whole star system.
A good planet name should be pronounceable, distinct from its neighbours in the same story, and quietly suggestive of what a traveller would find there – an ocean world called Thalassa or a mining colony called Cuprion tells the reader something before a single line of description. Use the meaning as a seed for the setting: climate, colonists, founding myth or the disaster everyone still talks about.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the meaning first, then the name: decide whether the world is a desert, an ice giant or a farming colony and pick a root that quietly signals it, so the name does exposition for you.
- Build a system, not just a planet, by reusing one root with astronomical suffixes – Aurelia, Aurelia Minor, Aurelia Secundus – which mirrors how real exoplanets and moons are catalogued.
- Vary the source language across your setting so a reader can tell factions or eras apart: Latin for an old empire, Arabic star names for navigators, mythic lands for lost or legendary worlds.
- Say the name aloud with a common noun after it ('the Verdantis colonies', 'the Erebus blockade'); if it stumbles or rhymes awkwardly, pick another.
- Avoid names that are already famous fictional planets or major real bodies unless the reference is deliberate; obscure moons like Elara or Himalia are fair game and sound convincingly astronomical.
Frequently asked questions
Where do real planet names come from?
The classical planets are named for Roman gods (Mars, Venus, Jupiter), most moons for figures connected to that god in Greek myth, and the moons of Uranus for Shakespeare and Pope characters. Many bright stars have Arabic names, and modern exoplanets get catalogue designations like Kepler-186f unless the IAU runs a public naming contest.
Are the meanings in this generator accurate?
Yes. Latin and Greek names are given their dictionary meanings, star names use the accepted translations of their Arabic or Greek originals, and mythical places are described according to the tradition they come from. A few compound names (like Terravox) are new coinages whose meaning follows from their roots.
Can I use these planet names in a published novel or game?
Names built from Latin, Greek and mythology are not protected by copyright, so you can use them freely. It is still worth searching a name before you commit, since a handful (like Arcadia or Elysium) are widely used in existing games and films.
How do I make a planet name sound scientific rather than fantasy?
Add a catalogue-style suffix or designation – Kepler-style numbers, Roman numerals, or words like Prime, Minor and b/c/d – and lean toward Latin roots or star names. Softer mythic names such as Avalon or Shambhala read as fantasy; Ferrum IV or Achernar Prime reads as hard sci-fi.
