Earth Elemental Name Generator
Grinding names for spirits of rock and soil
Generate earth elemental names that sound like stone on the move: grinding true names such as Grummok and Thuddrun, epithets like Korrgath the Seated Mountain, and substance names like Shale-Speaker and Loamfather for D&D, Pathfinder and fiction.
About earth elemental names
An earth elemental is not built and not born into a family: it is a piece of the ground that stood up, so it has no surname and no maker's mark. Most of the names here are true names in an invented elemental tongue, written to sound like stone moving: doubled consonants, low vowels and a hard stop, as in Grummok, Thuddrun or Dhorrum. In Dungeons & Dragons the speech of earth is called Terran, a dialect of Primordial; these names are written in that spirit, and none is a word of Terran.
Many true names return with an epithet of weight, stillness or quake (Korrgath the Seated Mountain). Others are named for a substance (Shale-Speaker, Loamfather, Quartzil), carry a title from a real word for earth or stone, such as Latin Saxum Vetus, old rock, or German Urgestein, primeval rock, or hold a rank at an elemental court. Mortals who bind an elemental give it plainer names like Old Doorstop, and small ones answer to Clodlet or Grittle.
Short forms such as Korr, Dhum and Thudd are for shouting in a fight. Published earth lords have names of their own, among them Ogremoch in Dungeons & Dragons and Therazane in World of Warcraft; they belong to their games and are not in this list.
How to choose earth elemental names
- Match length to mass: a pebble sprite gets one or two light syllables (Clodlet, Grittle), a walking mountain gets a long true name and an epithet.
- Give a summoned elemental two names. The mage shouts Korr in a fight; only the binding circle holds the full name, Korrgath the Seated Mountain.
- Pick the substance before the name. Granite, clay, sand and ore suggest different tempers, so Granite Hush and Red Clay Rising should not behave alike.
- Say it slowly and low. If the name can be rushed or sung it reads as air or water; an earth name should make the speaker stop at the end.
- For a whole court, vary the titles. One prince, one margrave and one castellan read as a hierarchy; three princes read as a mistake.
Frequently asked questions
What language do earth elementals speak in D&D?
Terran, one of the four dialects of Primordial alongside Aquan, Auran and Ignan. The true names in this list, such as Dhorrum and Gorrundal, are invented to suit a slow, grinding tongue. They are not taken from any published Terran vocabulary.
What is the difference between an earth elemental and a golem?
A golem is made by someone, from clay, stone or iron, and is named by its maker. An earth elemental is the ground itself come alive, native to an elemental plane or raised from a hillside by a summoner. That is why this list has true names, epithets and substances, and no workshop names.
Which names use real words for earth and stone?
The titles do. Saxum Vetus and Lapis Magnus are Latin for old rock and great stone, Autochthon is Greek for one sprung from the land itself, Steinalt is German for ancient (literally stone-old), Sangdel is Persian for stone-hearted, and Iwakura is the Japanese word for a sacred rock where a spirit is said to rest. They are used here as titles, the way a summoner might borrow them.
What is a good name for a summoned earth elemental?
Something short enough to call in a fight: Korr, Dhum, Thudd or Grumm. If the party keeps it around, a mortal nickname such as Old Doorstop or The Wall That Followed Me Home suits a bound elemental better than its true name.
