Generate earth genasi names for D&D 5e using the three ways genasi are actually named: human names from their mortal parent's culture, dao-flavored names from their genie heritage, and self-chosen names taken from stone, ore and gemstone.
About earth genasi names
Earth genasi are the descendants of dao, the genies of the Elemental Plane of Earth, and in Dungeons & Dragons they do not have a naming language of their own. The 5e Elemental Evil Player's Companion and Monsters of the Multiverse both say genasi take names from the human culture that raised them, then often adopt an elemental name later in life once they understand what they are. That gives you three real sources to draw from, and this list covers all of them.
The first is the mortal parent's culture. In the Forgotten Realms genasi are commonly born in Calimshan, where the dao and other genies were once slavers and rulers, so Arabic-style names like Zahra, Tariq, Idris and Nadira are especially fitting, and a dao-touched surname such as al-Hajar ('of the stone'), al-Jabal ('of the mountain') or al-Sakhr ('of the rock') marks the heritage. Northern or Chondathan human names (Marta, Orrin, Torvin) work just as well for genasi born elsewhere.
The second source is stone itself. Many earth genasi choose or are given a name that is simply a rock, ore or gemstone: Basalt, Flint, Slate, Petra, Kaolin, Garnet. The third is a heavier, invented sound with hard consonants and low vowels (Kharsan, Dorak, Grennok, Bryndis) paired with a surname about the earth: Cragborn, Ledgewalker, Faultline. Whichever you pick, the best earth genasi names feel slow, solid and a little grim, matching a people who tend to be patient, stubborn and hard to move.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give your genasi a birth name from their human parent's culture and a second, self-chosen stone name they took when their heritage manifested; use both in play.
- For a Calishite or dao-heritage genasi, add an Arabic-style epithet like al-Hajar (of the stone) or al-Jabal (of the mountain) as a surname.
- Match the name to your character's stone: obsidian and onyx for dark, sharp personalities; sandstone, ochre and loam for warm, grounded ones.
- Keep the sound heavy: hard K, G, D and R consonants and low vowels (Dorak, Grennok, Kharsan) read as earth, while airy vowels read as air genasi.
- Use a plain human name and let the character's cracked-stone skin do the work if you want to play against type; not every earth genasi needs to be called Granite.
Frequently asked questions
How are earth genasi named in D&D 5e?
Genasi take names from the human culture that raised them, since they have no language of their own. Many later adopt an elemental name that reflects their heritage, such as Flint, Petra or Basalt, so it is common for a genasi to have both.
What are earth genasi descended from?
Earth genasi carry the blood of dao, the genies of the Elemental Plane of Earth. In the Forgotten Realms most genasi bloodlines trace back to Calimshan, which is why Arabic-flavored names suit them well.
Do earth genasi have last names?
Only if the culture that raised them uses them. A genasi from a human city might carry a family surname; one raised among dwarves might take a clan name; many drop surnames entirely and go by a single stone name.
Can I use these names in a homebrew campaign or published adventure?
Yes. All of the names here are original or drawn from public-domain sources like real Arabic given names and mineral names, so they are safe to use in home games, streams and published work.
