Generate alien planet names for science fiction: invented alien-language worlds, survey designations like Epsilon Veldra III, colony names such as Coldharbor and New Tharsis, and mythic or descriptive names for strange new worlds. Built for novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and worldbuilding projects.

About alien planet names

Science fiction names its planets in four recognizable ways, and a convincing alien world usually fits one of them. The first is the alien-language name: a word that belongs to whoever lives there, with a phonology that feels foreign but pronounceable, like Zorvath, Xenthara, Ka'Tesh or Qo'nath. Apostrophes, doubled consonants and rare letters (x, q, z, kh) signal otherness; a clean vowel at the end keeps it sayable.

The second is the survey designation, which is how humans would actually label a new world: a star name or catalog number plus a Roman numeral or lowercase letter, such as Epsilon Veldra III, Tau Oriel b or Keplan 88b. The third is the colony name, where settlers reach for something hopeful, homesick or blunt: New Tharsis, Coldharbor, Halcyon Reach, Petrov's Folly, Landfall. The fourth borrows from myth and lost lands (Hyperborea, Xibalba, Breidablik), a trick used by many space operas for planets that should feel ancient.

This generator mixes all four, plus descriptive names like Bloodmoon and Saltglass and a few epithet-style worlds such as Drowned Arkady or Eye of Thessa. Match the style to who named the planet in your story, and it will sound like it has a history before your characters arrive.

How to choose alien planet names

  • Ask who named the planet: natives produce alien-language names (Vaelor, Tesh'Kara), surveyors produce designations (Delta Ossira II), and settlers produce English or homesick names (New Lagos, Coldharbor).
  • Keep alien-language names to two or three syllables with one unusual sound; Xenthara works because only the X is strange, while a string of apostrophes becomes unreadable.
  • Use Roman numerals or lowercase letters consistently: IV means the fourth planet from its star in most fiction, while b is the first planet found around that star in real astronomy.
  • Give a system a naming scheme, not one name: a star called Veldra with worlds Veldra II, Veldra III and a moon the locals call Ashfall immediately feels mapped and lived in.
  • Say the name in dialogue with a preposition ("We're three days out from Coldharbor") and make sure it does not collide with a famous canon planet.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a planet name sound alien?

Sounds that are rare in English (x, q, z, zh, kh), apostrophes or hyphens breaking syllables, and unusual consonant pairs like Qo'nath or Vor-Dalen. Keep a clear vowel rhythm so readers can still pronounce it.

Should I name a planet after its star?

If humans discovered it, yes: Epsilon Veldra III or Tau Oriel b is how a survey would label it. Settlers usually give it a friendlier name later, so a planet can have both a designation and a common name.

Can I use these planet names in my novel or game?

Yes. They are original names created for this generator. Search any favorite before publishing to be sure it is not a well-known planet from another franchise, especially the mythological ones that other writers also borrow.

How is this different from the star system and galaxy generators?

This page names individual worlds. The star system generator names the star and its family of planets, and the galaxy generator names the whole region. Use all three together to build a coherent star map.
