Generate fantasy world names for novels, D&D campaigns and worldbuilding projects: invented names like Vaelthorne and Ithrandal, English compound realms like Everwinter, Latin and Norse styles, and evocative titles like The Sundered Realms.

About fantasy world names

The famous fantasy worlds show how few rules there really are. Tolkien's Middle-earth is a translation of the Old Norse Midgard. Westeros, Narnia and Tamriel are invented words with one strong stressed syllable. Earthsea and Discworld are plain English compounds. Roshar, Thedas and Eorzea sound like languages that exist off the page. What they share is that each name is short, easy to say aloud, and sets a mood rather than describing the map: Narnia is soft, Mordor is hard, Azeroth is grand.

Invented world names tend to follow a few templates. Latinate endings (-ia, -aria, -oria) read as old and civilized, which is why Aurelia and Veloria feel like empires. Norse and Germanic endings (-heim, -gard, -mark, -holm) read cold and martial. Elvish-flavored names stack liquid consonants and open vowels (Laurelindor, Ellorien). English compounds built from landscape words (Everwinter, Dawnmere, Wintermark) are instantly readable and suit a setting meant to feel familiar. Titled names such as The Sundered Realms tell the reader what happened to the world before the story starts.

The list below mixes all of these, plus a few canon worlds and legendary lands like Hy-Brasil and Hyperborea for reference. Pick the template that matches your setting, then make sure the world's name does not clash with your major kingdoms and cities, which usually follow their own language rules.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the name is what the inhabitants call their world or an outsider's label. Locals usually have a plain word (Midgard, Earthsea); outsiders and gods use grander ones (The Mortal Realm).
  • Keep the world name to two or three syllables with one clear stress so readers can say it in their heads. Long names belong to continents and empires, not the whole world.
  • Match the sound to the mood: soft liquids and open vowels (Ellorien, Narnia) for hopeful or pastoral settings, hard stops and dark vowels (Drakmar, Mordor) for grim ones.
  • Give the name a meaning even if you never state it. A world called Sunderfall implies a catastrophe; Brightharbor implies a seafaring, optimistic culture. That hidden meaning will shape your lore.
  • Check that the world name does not share its ending with your main kingdom or capital, or readers will blur them together.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a fantasy world name sound right?

Brevity and a clear stress pattern matter most. Narnia, Westeros, Tamriel and Roshar are all two or three syllables and easy to say. The vowels and consonants then set the mood: liquid sounds feel gentle and elven, hard stops feel harsh and martial.

Should my world name have a meaning?

It helps. Middle-earth, Earthsea and Discworld describe the world outright, while names like Sunderfall or The Drowned Kingdoms hint at a past catastrophe. Even an invented name benefits from an in-world etymology you can mention once in the lore.

Can I use these names for a D&D campaign or a published novel?

The original names here are free to use for any project. The handful of canon worlds such as Middle-earth, Westeros, Azeroth and Faerûn are included for reference and style, and should not be used in commercial work.

What is the difference between a world name and a continent or kingdom name?

A world name covers the entire setting (Toril), a continent is one landmass on it (Faerûn), and a kingdom is a political state (Cormyr). In practice many settings are named after their main continent, so if your story never leaves one landmass, a single name can do both jobs.
