Generate world names for D&D campaigns, novels, video games and worldbuilding projects: invented names in a dozen phonologies, English landscape compounds, Latin and mythic worlds, and canon settings from Arda to Teyvat for reference. Pick the style that fits your setting's mood.

About world names

The name of a world does a different job from the name of a kingdom or city. Characters rarely say it aloud, so it works mostly on the reader: Arda, Pern, Thra and Teyvat are short, stressed on the first syllable, and unlike any real place. Worlds with a longer name usually carry a visible root that tells you the genre (Runeterra, Ringworld, Hyboria, Alagaësia). Titled worlds such as The Wheel of Ages or The Salted Earth describe the world's central fact, which makes them good for campaign settings where the title doubles as a pitch.

Phonology sets mood. Latinate endings (-ia, -aria, -us) feel ancient and civilized; Norse (-gard, -heim, -mark) feel cold and martial; liquid elvish strings (Ilyrrane, Sylquenor) feel graceful; heavy consonant clusters (Ghaz-Umrahl, Vel'Zaroth) feel hostile. Borrowing the sound of a real language family, as Shinzaru, Qamarah, Velikomir and Moanalani do, signals which culture inspired the setting without copying a real place name. English compounds (Embervale, Wintermoor, Crownfall) are the most readable and suit grounded, low-fantasy worlds.

The list mixes all of these with canon worlds from fiction and games for reference. Choose a name that does not clash with your major regions, which normally follow their own naming rules, and say it out loud before you commit.

How to choose world names

  • Pick the world name last, after your main kingdoms and continents, so it can sit above them in a different register: a plain name over ornate regions, or a grand title over plain ones.
  • Keep it to two or three syllables if it will appear in a book title or on a map header; Sarn Vethis and Orrinhold read at a glance, Chandrakshetra does not.
  • Test the name in a sentence: 'the peoples of X', 'X was broken' and the adjective form (Keshvanari, Ostromerean). If none of those work, the name is hard to live with for a whole campaign.
  • Avoid accidental collisions: search your pick with 'world' and 'setting' before publishing, since names like Sera, Remnant and Eternia already belong to well-known franchises.
  • A world does not need one name. Give it a scholarly name, a common name and a mythic name (Arda, Middle-earth, Endor) and let different cultures in your setting use different ones.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a fantasy world?

One that is short, easy to pronounce, distinct from real places, and matched in mood to the setting: Narnia is soft, Mordor is hard, Azeroth is grand. Most famous examples are invented words of two or three syllables with a single strong stress.

How do I name a D&D campaign world?

Decide whether players will say the name in character. If yes, choose something speakable like Orrinhold or Caldamere. If the name is mostly a label on the map, a title such as The Hundred Hearths or The Tidebound Lands can carry the campaign's theme.

Can I use these world names in a published book or game?

The invented names are free to use. Canon worlds like Arda, Teyvat and Runeterra are included for reference and belong to their owners, and mythic names such as Avalon, Thule and Atlantis are public domain but widely used.

Should a world name and a planet name be different?

Often yes. In-universe, people call their world 'the world' or use a mythic name, while an outside or sci-fi perspective uses a planetary designation. Tamriel is the continent, Nirn the planet; Middle-earth is a continent of Arda. Deciding which level you are naming avoids confusion later.
