Generate sci-fi planet names for novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and worldbuilding: invented worlds like Veridane and Korrath, survey designations like Epsilon Marrow IV, colony names like New Carthage and Landfall, mythic worlds borrowed from the classics, and epithet-style planets such as The Cinder World.

About sci-fi planet names

Science fiction has settled into a few reliable ways of naming planets, and each one tells the reader something about the world's history. Invented proper nouns (Veridane, Korrath, Nuvaris) suggest a native population or a long-settled culture. Survey designations built from a star name plus a Roman numeral or lowercase letter (Epsilon Marrow IV, Zeta Halloran b, KX-1138) signal a frontier world that humans catalogued before anyone lived there. Colony names are the most emotional: settlers name worlds for home (New Carthage, New Kyoto), for hope (Providence, Newhope, Landfall) or for what the place did to them (Widow's Reach, Fort Dismay, Last Light).

Two more styles round out the genre. Mythic and classical names (Elysium, Tartarus, Lyonesse, Hyperion) give a world instant gravity and are a favorite of space opera, and epithet names such as The Cinder World, Eye of Tessaly or Drowned Carrow work as nicknames that the crew uses instead of the official designation.

This generator covers all five registers so you can build a believable star chart: official catalog names for the survey office, local names for the people who live there, and slang for the pilots who fly between them. Pair a designation with a common name and the planet already feels discovered, settled and argued over.

How to choose sci-fi planet names

  • Decide who named the planet before you pick: surveyors use designations, settlers use hopeful or homesick names, natives use their own language, and pilots use nicknames.
  • Keep invented names pronounceable in dialogue. Two or three syllables with one unusual sound (Korrath, Yrgoth, Quintara) read better than a string of apostrophes.
  • Use Roman numerals for a planet's position in its system and lowercase letters for order of discovery; mixing the two in one setting looks careless.
  • Give important planets two names: a catalog designation like Theta Corvi III and a common name like Coldwater, then let characters reveal which one they use.
  • Mythic names are powerful but heavily used, so check Elysium, Avalon and Arcadia against the franchises your readers know before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How do real astronomers name planets, and should I copy that?

Real exoplanets are named for their star plus a lowercase letter starting at b (Kepler-186f, Proxima Centauri b). Copying that style makes a hard sci-fi setting feel authentic; softer space opera usually adds a proper name on top, which is why this list offers both.

What makes a planet name sound like science fiction rather than fantasy?

Numerals, Greek letters and catalog prefixes read as sci-fi immediately. For invented names, clean consonants like V, X, K and Z and endings in -is, -os, -ane or -ar feel spacefaring, while names ending in -ia or -heim drift toward fantasy.

Can I name a planet after a real place or person?

Yes, colonists do it constantly, which is why New Lagos, Shackleton Deep and Okonkwo Prime are here. Use real explorers, cities or scientists for a settled human world, but avoid living private individuals and trademarked names.

Are these names different from the alien planet generator?

This page covers the whole science fiction range, including human colony names, survey designations and mythic names. The alien planet generator focuses on worlds named by non-human species, with heavier alien phonology.
