Generate fantasy planet names with the sound of real space opera and planetary romance: Latinate homeworlds like Veloria and Tarsis, harsh frontier worlds such as Kraghar, catalog designations like Kepler-442c, and poetic names for garden worlds and dead moons. Built for sci-fi novels, RPG star maps, and world-building projects.

About fantasy planet names

Science fiction names its planets in a handful of recognizable styles, and matching the style to the world tells your reader what to expect before they land. Latin and Greek endings - Veloria, Tarsis, Meridia, Hyperion - are the default for civilized homeworlds and old colonies because they echo how real astronomers named the solar system. Harsh consonant clusters (Kraghar, Vorkath, Tuchanka) signal a hostile or warlike world, and apostrophes and clipped syllables (Vek'tar, Th'ren, Ix) suggest an alien tongue. Catalog designations such as Kepler-442c, LV-426, or Tau Ceti IV are what real exoplanets get and what a survey ship would log before anyone lives there, so they suit hard SF and newly discovered worlds. Colonists then rename them - New Terra, Landfall, Providence, Far Haven - and those hopeful names carry the whole history of a settlement.

The great fictional planets show how far a name can go: Arrakis (Dune) is dry and Arabic-flavored like its deserts, Gethen (Le Guin) is short and cold, Trantor (Asimov) sounds like a machine, and Pandora warns you. Single evocative English words - Verdance, Emberfall, Longnight, Requiem - are a newer style that works especially well for moons and minor worlds.

Aim for a name that a pilot could say once over the radio and a poet could put in a title.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match sound to environment: soft vowels and -ia/-is endings for garden worlds, hard consonants for deserts and war zones, ice-words and long vowels for frozen planets.
  • Give a colonized world two names - the survey code it was found under (Gliese 581g) and the name the settlers chose (Firstfall) - and let characters use whichever reveals their attitude.
  • In a multi-planet system, use Roman numerals or Prime/Secundus for siblings (Tau Ceti IV, Ceres Secundus) so readers can tell they orbit the same star.
  • Say the name aloud with 'the planet' in front of it; if it needs a subtitle to be pronounceable, shorten it.
  • Borrow from mythology only if the myth fits - a planet called Persephone should have something to do with descent, seasons, or half-year darkness.

Frequently asked questions

How are real planets and exoplanets named?

Solar system planets are named after Roman gods by tradition. Exoplanets get their host star's catalog name plus a lowercase letter in order of discovery (Kepler-442c, Proxima b); the International Astronomical Union occasionally runs public campaigns to give famous ones proper names.

What makes a fantasy planet name sound good?

Two to four syllables, a clear stress, and sounds that match the world's climate or culture. Arrakis, Gethen, and Pandora are all easy to say and each hints at what the planet is like.

Are names like Arrakis or Trantor free to use?

Planets from published works (Arrakis, Trantor, Pern, Aiur, Palaven and similar) belong to their creators and appear here as reference examples. The original names in this list are free for any project, including commercial ones.

Should I name a planet after its star?

It is the realistic default - Tau Ceti IV, Epsilon Eridani II - and works well for frontier or hard-SF settings. Once a world has a native culture or a long-settled population, it almost always earns a proper name of its own.
