Duchess Name Generator

A duchess ranks just below royalty, and her name is built to show it. In British usage she is formally 'Her Grace the Duchess of Devonshire' and is addressed as 'Your Grace', never 'Lady Devonshire'; the territorial title, not the surname, is what people use. In fiction that means the cleanest duchess name has three parts: a given name with some weight to it (Georgiana, Seraphina, Wilhelmina), a territorial designation that sounds like a real estate or county (Hartwell, Carrowmere, Marlborough), and the connecting formula, as in Georgiana, Duchess of Hartwell. A widow becomes the Dowager Duchess once her son's wife takes the title, a useful distinction for family sagas.

The Continent has its own flavors. French duchesses take 'de' and a château name (Duchesse Clémence de Vaucourt), Spanish ones 'de' plus a town or estate (Duquesa Inés de Valdeorras), Italian ones often a dynastic surname (Duchessa Ginevra Sforzini), and German Herzoginnen a 'von' with a castle or region. Russia's grand duchesses and Austria's archduchesses were imperial daughters rather than holders of a duchy, and their names carry that court grandeur.
