Generate noble names that sound like they belong on a family crest: given names paired with house names, de/von/di particles, landed 'of' styles and a sprinkling of titles. Built for D&D nobles, fantasy novels, court intrigue campaigns and any human aristocrat who needs a pedigree.

About noble names

A noble name is really two names doing different jobs. The given name marks the person, and it tends to be old-fashioned, saint-derived or dynastic: Aldric, Isolde, Geoffrey, Constance, names that repeat down a family tree because heirs are named after grandparents. The house name marks the bloodline and the land, which is why so many real noble surnames are places (Beauchamp, Montferrand, Falkenberg) or carry a particle that literally means 'of': French de, German von, Italian di, Dutch van. In English-style settings the house name is more often a compound that sounds like an estate, such as Ravenhurst, Thornbury or Greymoor.

The list above mixes several traditions so you can match the flavor of your setting. Anglo-Norman names (Piers Langley, Alianor Pembury) suit a Westeros or Forgotten Realms human court. French and German particle names read as continental and courtly. Italian and Spanish names work for merchant republics and sun-baked kingdoms. The invented fantasy houses (Draymoor, Vellacourt, Stormhaven) are setting-neutral and safe to build a whole dynasty around.

When you need more than one name from the same family, keep the house name fixed and vary only the given names and titles. That single choice does more to make a court feel real than any amount of heraldry.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the house name first, then the person: a family called Ravenhurst or de Valcourt tells you what their lands, banners and politics look like before you name a single heir.
  • Use a particle (de, von, di, van, of) to signal a landed title, and drop it for cadet branches, bastards or families that bought their way into the peerage.
  • Give siblings and cousins given names from the same source pool, such as Anglo-Norman for one house and German for another, so players can tell the families apart by ear.
  • Add a title only when it matters at the table: Lord Edric Thornhallow in the throne room, plain Edric Thornhallow in the tavern.
  • For D&D noble backgrounds, note which name the character actually uses day to day; an heir hiding from their family will introduce themselves by a given name alone.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound noble rather than common?

Mostly the surname. Place-based house names (Montclair, Falkenberg, Thornbury), 'of' or de/von particles, and long, formal given names such as Aurelian or Genevieve all read as aristocratic. Common folk in most settings have trade names or patronymics instead.

Can I use these for a D&D noble background?

Yes. The names fit human nobles in the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Greyhawk or a homebrew world. Pair one with the Noble background's Position of Privilege feature and decide whether your character is an heir, a younger child or a disgraced cousin; the name works either way.

Are these real historical noble families?

A handful of surnames such as Beauchamp, Ferrers or Courtenay are genuine medieval English houses, used with generic given names. The majority are invented to sound authentic, so you can build your own dynasty without colliding with real history.

How should I name a whole noble family?

Fix the house name, then choose given names that repeat or rhyme across generations (Aldric, Aldous, Aldemar). Heirs often carry a grandparent's name; younger children and daughters get more variety. Use titles to show rank and the bare house name when family members are spoken of collectively.
