Duke Name Generator

A duke is the highest rank below the crown, so a duke's name has to carry three things at once: a personal name, a family name, and the land he holds. Historically the land mattered most. Dukes were addressed as Your Grace and referred to by territory (the Duke of Normandy, the Herzog von Bayern, the Duque de Medinaceli), and the personal name only appeared in charters or when an epithet stuck: William the Bastard, Charles the Bold, Henry the Lion. Fantasy writers usually flip that and lead with a strong given name and surname, then add the duchy for weight: Corvin Ashgrave, Duke of Hollowmere.

The sound changes with the court. English dukes pair Norman or Anglo-Saxon given names with place-surnames (Edmund Harcourt, Aldous Fenwright). French dukes carry de and a seat (Étienne de Valcourt, Duc de Montreve); German ones von and a castle (Friedrich von Adlerstein); Italian ones di and a city (Lorenzo di Castellane); Spanish ones long, sonorous titles (Rodrigo de Alcázar, Duke of Montoro). Grand dukes, archdukes, dukes palatine and dowager duchesses add further shades of rank. This generator mixes all of those with invented fantasy duchies, villainous dukes, comic dukes and historical-style epithets, so you can pick a name that tells readers how powerful, old or dangerous a house is before the character speaks.
