Generate princess names for fairy tales, fantasy novels, games and royal characters: medieval and courtly European names, Norse, Celtic, Persian, Arabic, Slavic, Indian and East Asian royal names, plus full styles like Elowen of Thornvale and Isolde the Fair.
About princess names
Princess names in stories do a specific job: they have to sound both gentle and important. The classic fairy-tale register leans on soft, flowing Romance and Old French names with three or four syllables (Seraphina, Genevieve, Rosalind, Melisande), often ending in -a, -ine or -elle, because those sounds read as delicate while the length reads as ceremonial. Real medieval courts give a grittier alternative: Hawise, Maud, Petronilla and Rohesia were all borne by actual royal daughters and instantly make a setting feel historical rather than Disney.
A princess rarely stands alone in a text, so the name usually carries a tag. 'Elowen of Thornvale' fixes her to a realm, 'Isolde the Fair' gives her a reputation, and a double name like 'Aurelia Rose' signals a christening in a large royal family. Choosing which tag to use is a worldbuilding decision: realms suit political stories, epithets suit legends, double names suit dynasties.
This generator also draws on royal traditions outside western Europe, with Norse (Astrid, Solveig), Celtic (Niamh, Rhiannon), Persian (Soraya, Shirin), Arabic (Amira, Layla), Slavic (Milena, Yaroslava), Indian (Padmini, Rukmini), East Asian (Kaguya, Meilin) and African (Makeda, Nzinga) names, so the princess can belong to whatever kind of kingdom you are building.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name's origin to the kingdom. A realm with Norse-style place names (Frosthold, Iskarholm) needs Astrid or Freydis, not Genevieve; mismatches are the fastest way to break immersion.
- Use the full style sparingly. Introduce her as 'Princess Isolde of the Western Isles' once, then call her Isolde; the long form is for heralds, letters and formal scenes.
- Give the epithet a reason. 'The Fair' and 'the Wise' are generic; 'the Swan-Hearted' or 'the Unbowed' implies a story the reader will want to hear.
- If she is one of several royal daughters, name the sisters with a shared pattern (all flower names, all saints, all ending in -a) so the family reads as a set.
- For a princess who will become a warrior or ruler, pick something shorter and harder (Maeve, Sigrid, Ximena) that still sounds good shouted across a battlefield or a council hall.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound like a princess name?
Mostly length and softness: three or four syllables, open vowels, and endings like -a, -ina, -elle, -ine or -ande (Seraphina, Evangeline, Melisande). Adding a realm ('of Ashmere') or an epithet ('the Radiant') does the rest. Short, hard names can work too, but they read as warrior princesses rather than fairy-tale ones.
Are these real historical princess names?
Many are. Medieval names like Rohesia, Hawise, Melisande and Petronilla belonged to real royal and noble daughters, and Nefertari, Makeda, Padmini and Hedwig are attested queens and princesses. The realms and epithets attached to names in this list are invented for fiction, and the rest are original or fairy-tale names chosen to sound regal.
Can I use these names for a Disney-style or fairy-tale story?
Yes. Names such as Aurora, Rapunzel, Odette and Briar Rose are traditional fairy-tale names rather than trademarks, and the original ones (Amarante, Clarimond, Elowen) are free to use. Avoid combining a canonical name with its canonical story beats if you want your princess to stand on her own.
How do I name a princess from a non-European kingdom?
Pick from the matching tradition here (Soraya or Shirin for a Persian-flavoured court, Meilin or Xiulan for an East Asian one, Amara or Makeda for an African one) and keep the title conventions of that culture in mind: a Persian princess would be a shahdokht, a Japanese one a hime, and the realm or epithet should use place names from the same language.
