Royal Name Generator
Kings, queens, emperors and heirs worthy of a throne
Generate royal names for kings, queens, princes, emperors and sultans: regal given names paired with dynastic surnames, regnal epithets like 'the Unbowed', and titles from courts around the world. Built for fantasy novels, D&D kingdoms, games and the occasional silly monarch.
About royal names
Royal names carry more weight than ordinary names because they have to do two jobs at once: identify a person and announce a dynasty. Real monarchs almost always combined a title, a given name drawn from a short pool the family reused for generations (Henry, Louis, Frederick, Eleanor), and either a regnal number or an epithet earned during the reign. The epithet is where the character lives. 'Edric the Just' and 'Edric the Unready' are the same name describing two very different kings, and a single well-chosen byname tells a reader what the realm thinks of its ruler.
The names here mix several registers so you can match the feel of your setting. There are Western European court names with house surnames (King Aldric Valemont, Princess Rosalind of Haverly), titles from other traditions such as Sultan, Shah, Rani, Tsar, Khan, Oba and Tlatoani, fantasy royalty with invented but pronounceable surnames, epithet-only styles like 'Magnus Barefoot', a run of Arthurian and classical rulers, and a set of deliberately funny monarchs for comedy games or children's stories.
When you pick one, think about the realm first. A cold northern kingdom suits hard consonants and Norse-style patronymics; a sun-soaked empire wants Latinate vowels and long honorifics; a small, old court sounds right with a plain name and a big number.
How to choose royal names
- Decide whether your monarch is known by a number (Constantin IV) or an epithet (Constantin the Lawgiver). Numbers suggest a long, stable dynasty; epithets suggest a ruler whose reign was memorable for one reason.
- Reuse given names across a royal family. Real dynasties recycled three or four names for centuries, so a grandson named after his grandfather instantly reads as legitimate.
- Match the title to the culture: Sultan, Shah, Tsar, Khan, Rajah and Kaiser each imply a whole court, language and set of customs. Mixing them in one realm only works if the realm is deliberately cosmopolitan.
- Keep the given name short if the title and house name are long. 'Queen Maelis of the Thousand Lakes' works because Maelis is two syllables.
- For fantasy settings, give the commoners and the royals slightly different name shapes. If royals have surnames or 'of Place' while peasants have only a given name, the hierarchy shows on the page.
Frequently asked questions
How did real kings and queens get names like 'the Great' or 'the Unready'?
Epithets were given by chroniclers, subjects or later historians, not chosen by the ruler, and many were sarcastic or mistranslated. Aethelred 'the Unready' actually comes from 'unraed', meaning poorly advised. For fiction, that makes the epithet a great tool: it reveals how the realm judges its monarch.
What makes a royal name sound regal rather than ordinary?
Length and structure. Royal names usually stack a title, a classical or old-fashioned given name, and a dynastic marker such as a house name, 'of Place', a regnal number or an epithet. Even a plain name like Edith becomes royal as 'Princess Edith of Wessex'.
Can I use these names for D&D or a fantasy novel?
Yes. The list covers historical-style courts, invented fantasy dynasties and titles from many cultures, so you can pick names for an entire royal family, rival claimants and neighbouring rulers. Pair them with a kingdom or noble house name to round out the court.
Are there funny royal names in the generator?
Yes. A section of the list is deliberately ridiculous, with monarchs like King Bartholomew the Slightly Damp and Duchess Millicent Fancyhat, useful for comedy campaigns, party games and children's stories.
