Dukedom Name Generator

A dukedom is the title and dignity held by a duke; a duchy is the land. In Britain the word nearly always means the peerage title, and those titles follow clear patterns. Most are named for a county or town (Norfolk, Devonshire, Bedford, Richmond), a Scottish region or estate (Argyll, Buccleuch, Roxburghe, Atholl), or a place tied to the first holder's career: Wellington and Marlborough were villages chosen to commemorate victories, Bronte was a Sicilian estate gifted to Nelson. Royal dukedoms use old earldoms and cities such as York, Cornwall, Cambridge, Sussex, and Edinburgh, and Scottish double titles (Buccleuch and Queensberry, Richmond and Gordon) record two dukedoms merged by inheritance.

On the Continent, Napoleonic and Spanish dukedoms were often named after battles or distant towns (Magenta, Otranto, Tetuán), German ones after the family seat or a partitioned line (Saxe-Eisenach, Holstein-Glücksburg), and Italian and Spanish grandee titles after small fiefs that the family might never have visited (Medinaceli, Montalto, Castelvetrano).

For fiction, the trick is to pick a name that sounds like a real place in your setting's language, then attach it to a plausible story: an ancient county, a hard-won battle, a castle on a river.
