Drug Name Generator

Fictional drugs are named on three levels, and using all three is what makes a setting's pharmacology feel real. At the top are brand names, which real marketing teams design to be short, unlike any competitor, and vaguely emotional: Ambien, Xanax, Lipitor. They avoid hard meaning, lean on X, Z, V and Q for a modern feel, and often end in -a, -ex, -ix, or -il (Ambrexa, Verilex, Harmonil). Underneath sits the generic name, which follows real stems set by the World Health Organization: -zepam for benzodiazepines, -oxetine for antidepressants, -statin for cholesterol drugs, -mab for antibodies, -vir for antivirals. A name like Torvazepam or Halcimab tells a reader with any medical knowledge exactly what class of drug it is without you explaining anything.

The third level is what people call it on the street, and it is almost always the opposite of the brand approach: one blunt, concrete word. Real slang runs to Ice, Molly, Glass, Tar, Snow, and Skittles; fiction adds Spice, Nuke, Zydrate, Prozium, and Substance D. Cyberpunk games layer combat stims (Redline, Overclock, Warshot) on top of that, and dystopian fiction specializes in the state-issued pacifier - Soma, Prozium, Obedryl - whose soothing name is the point.

When inventing one, decide what the drug does and who is naming it, then let the register follow.
