About medicine names
Every medicine sold anywhere in the world has an International Nonproprietary Name (INN), a single generic name assigned by the World Health Organization so that a pharmacist in Lagos and a nurse in Lisbon mean the same molecule when they say amoxicillin. That is why generic names look alike across languages and why they are the names you see on hospital charts, drug labels, and clinical trials rather than the trademarked brands used in advertising.
The names carry hidden meaning. A shared stem points to a drug class: -pril (lisinopril, ramipril) marks ACE inhibitors used for blood pressure; -statin marks cholesterol drugs; -olol marks beta blockers; -prazole marks acid reducers; -mab marks monoclonal antibodies; -tinib marks targeted cancer drugs; -vir marks antivirals; -cillin, -mycin and -floxacin mark antibiotic families. - Format prescriptions the way pharmacies do (drug, strength, route, frequency): 'Metformin 500 mg PO twice daily'.
