Generate names for fictional drugs, narcotics and vices in fantasy and sci-fi worlds: alchemical powders, smuggled spices, dwarven snuffs and back-alley elixirs, each with the slang feel of a real street name. Built for gritty RPG campaigns, grimdark novels and cyberpunk-adjacent settings.

About fantasy drug names

Fictional drugs are named the same way real ones are: there is the formal name (laudanum, aqua vitae, tincture of opium) and there is the street name (black drop, poppy milk, snow). The formal names sound like an apothecary or alchemist wrote them, often in dog-Latin: Elixir Noctis, Spiritus Umbrae, Oleum Sanguis. The street names are short, concrete and slightly wrong, usually a single word for a colour, texture, effect or feeling: Chalk, Rust, Hush, Glow, Drift. The best fantasy substances have both, and the gap between them says something about who uses the drug and who sells it.

Fantasy settings add three more sources. Botanical names borrow real poisons and hallucinogens (belladonna, datura, ergot, mandrake, fly agaric) or invent plausible plants like Nightsap and Ghostcap. Monster-part names (Kraken Ink, Basilisk Milk, Wyrmbile) imply a supply chain of hunters and smugglers. Social names (Widow's Milk, Beggar's Bliss, Docker's Chew, Duke's Weakness) tell you which class of people is hooked, which is worth more to a story than the pharmacology.

A few well-known fictional drugs (skooma, spice melange, death sticks) are included as reference points for tone; the rest are original and range from mild tavern vices to substances that should carry a plot.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give each drug a formal apothecary name and a street name; characters of different classes will use different ones, and that difference is free characterisation.
  • Name the substance after its source (a plant, a mineral, a monster part) if you want it to drive plot, because a supply chain implies smugglers, hunters and turf.
  • One-word street names (Hush, Chalk, Drift) sound most authentic; keep 'of the Gods' style names for legendary substances only.
  • Match the name to the effect: soft sounds (Sweet Forgetting, Slowlight) for sedatives and dreamers, hard sounds (Slag, Blister, Sting) for stimulants and combat drugs.
  • Decide who is addicted before you decide what it does; a name like Soldier's Wife or Miner's Candle already tells the reader the human cost.

Frequently asked questions

How are fictional drugs usually named?

Real drug slang comes from colour (snow, brown), texture (crank, ice), effect (speed, smack) and source (grass, poppy). Fictional drugs follow the same rules, adding fantasy sources like monster parts, alchemical Latin and magical plants. Famous examples include Dune's spice melange, Elder Scrolls' skooma and Star Wars' death sticks.

What makes a fantasy drug name feel realistic?

Brevity and specificity. Real users do not say 'Elixir of Eternal Dreams'; they say 'drift'. Pair a plain one-word street name with a fussy formal name from the alchemist who sells it and the drug immediately feels like part of a working society.

Can I use these names in a published book or commercial game?

The original names here are free to use. A handful of reference names (skooma, spice melange, glitterstim, death sticks, Nuka-Jet, slo-mo) belong to specific franchises and should be avoided in commercial work.

Are these based on real drugs?

Some borrow the names of real historical preparations and poisonous plants (laudanum, aqua vitae, belladonna, ergot, datura, kykeon) for authenticity. They are included as naming inspiration for fiction, not as descriptions of any real substance or effect.
