Generate poison names for fantasy fiction and tabletop games: real toxic plants and fungi (Belladonna, Death Cap, Wolfsbane), D&D-style named poisons (Midnight Tears, Purple Worm Poison), and invented assassin's compounds like Widow's Kiss and Kingsbane.
About poison names
Poison names in fiction come from three main wells. The first is real toxicology, and it is hard to improve on: Belladonna (Italian for beautiful lady, because it dilated women's pupils), Wolfsbane, Monkshood, Henbane, Death Cap, Destroying Angel and Manchineel are all real plants and fungi whose common names were coined by frightened people. History adds Aqua Tofana, Cantarella and Poudre de Succession, the 'inheritance powder' of Renaissance courts. The second well is tabletop gaming: Dungeons & Dragons lists poisons such as Midnight Tears, Purple Worm Poison, Oil of Taggit, Torpor and Assassin's Blood, and Pathfinder adds Black Lotus Extract, King's Sleep and Dark Reaver Powder. The third is fantasy literature, where poisons carry evocative brand names: George R. R. Martin's The Strangler, Tears of Lys and Sweetsleep, or Robin Hobb's carryme.
Good invented poison names tend to work by irony (Mercy, Grace, Sweet Death), by symptom (Heartstop, Bonechill, Nervefire), by source (Adder's Tongue, Wyvern Poison, Hag's Spit) or by intended victim (Kingsbane, Priestbane, The Heir's Patience). The unsettling ones sound gentle, since a poisoner names a thing to sell it, not to warn.
Below you will find real botanical names, D&D and Pathfinder-style poisons and original coinages for assassins, alchemists, dark fantasy novels and homebrew campaigns.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name a poison after its effect or its source, not the word poison; Bonechill and Adder's Tongue tell the reader more than Deadly Toxin.
- Ironic soft names (Mercy, Sweetsleep, The Widow's Comfort) suit poisons sold at court; harsh names (Wraithcap, Bloodboil) suit poisons brewed in a swamp.
- Real plant names (Belladonna, Hellebore, Datura) ground a story instantly and are free to use; look up the actual symptoms to keep the details consistent.
- In D&D, match the name to delivery type: -bane and -root names for ingested poisons, venoms and oils for injury poisons, dusts and fumes for inhaled ones.
- Give a signature poison a name only the poisoner uses; if every character calls it The Pale Draught, it becomes a brand and a clue.
Frequently asked questions
What are some real poisons with good names?
Belladonna (deadly nightshade), Wolfsbane (aconite), Monkshood, Henbane, Hemlock, Foxglove, Death Cap, Destroying Angel and Manchineel are all real. Historical blends include Aqua Tofana, Cantarella and Poudre de Succession, the so-called inheritance powder.
What poisons exist in D&D 5e?
The Dungeon Master's Guide lists Assassin's Blood, Burnt Othur Fumes, Carrion Crawler Mucus, Essence of Ether, Malice, Midnight Tears, Oil of Taggit, Pale Tincture, Purple Worm Poison, Serpent Venom, Torpor, Truth Serum and Wyvern Poison. Drow poison and basic Poison (the vial) appear in the Player's Handbook.
How do I invent a poison name that sounds believable?
Base it on the poison's effect, source or victim, and keep it understated: Heartstop, Viper's Milk or Kingsbane. Poisoners in fiction give their wares gentle or clinical names, so the scariest names are often the calmest.
Can I use these poison names commercially?
Real plant names, historical poisons and the original coinages are free to use. Named poisons from published settings such as The Strangler or Purple Worm Poison should be avoided in commercial fiction to keep your work distinct.
