About demon species names
A demon species name works differently from a demon's personal name. Asmodeus or Graz'zt names one being; succubus, balor or rakshasa names a whole kind, and the word has to carry rank, habitat and behaviour at a glance. Real demonology is full of these class words: the Mesopotamian lilitu, gallu and utukku, the Hebrew shedim and mazzikin, the Persian daeva and druj, the Hindu asura, vetala and pishacha, the Arabic ifrit, marid and ghul, the Japanese oni and gaki. Each is a short, foreign-sounding noun that can take a plural and sit in a sentence like 'three gallu broke the ward'.
Modern games and fiction add two more styles. One is the invented breed name, usually harsh and consonant-heavy: balor, vrock, hezrou, glabrezu, cacodemon, mancubus. The other is the descriptive caste, an English compound that tells you what the thing does or where it lives: pit fiend, shadow demon, plague herald, bone devil. Good bestiaries mix all three, so the lowest dretch-like dregs get a grubby common name, mid-rank hunters get a coined word, and elite or noble castes get a Latin or liturgical ring.
This generator draws on every tradition: genuine folkloric demon kinds from a dozen cultures, original coined species in several phonologies, Latinate orders, and descriptive castes for hierarchies, homebrew settings and monster manuals.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide the species' role before naming it: lowly swarm demons suit short ugly words (dretch, manes, imp), hunters suit harsh coined names (vrock, Skarrowen), and ruling castes suit Latin or Greek forms (Ignifer, Tartarid).
- Make sure the name pluralises cleanly. Lilitu, oni and shedim work as both singular and plural; a name ending in -us or -ix should have an obvious plural your players or readers will actually say.
- Keep one phonology per infernal realm: if your abyss uses zh, kh and double consonants (Vrakhul, Ghazzun), do not mix in soft Elvish-sounding breeds unless that contrast is the point.
- Descriptive caste names should name a concrete trait or job (Flesh Weaver, Plague Herald, Pit Lurker), not a vague adjective; avoid stacking the same head word such as wraith or fiend across a whole bestiary.
- Borrowing a real folkloric kind like rakshasa, aswang or tzitzimitl brings its own lore, so read up on the original before attaching new traits to it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a demon species name and a demon name?
A demon name identifies one entity, like Mephistopheles or Baphomet, while a species name identifies a whole kind of demon, like succubus, balor, rakshasa or shedim. Species names are common nouns: they take plurals, describe a caste or breed, and are what a bestiary or monster manual lists.
What are some real types of demons from mythology?
Mesopotamian lore has lilitu, gallu, utukku and rabisu; Jewish tradition has shedim, mazzikin and dybbuk; Persian tradition has daeva and druj; Hindu and Buddhist texts name asura, rakshasa, pishacha, vetala and preta; Arabic folklore has jinn, ifrit, marid and ghul; Japanese folklore has oni and gaki; and Aztec myth has the tzitzimitl. Many of these appear in this generator alongside invented species.
How do I invent a demon species name for my own setting?
Pick a consistent sound palette for the realm, such as hard kh, zh, rr and double consonants, then build short two or three syllable words that are easy to pluralise, like Vrakhul, Dhuroth or Szarn. Reserve Latinate names such as Ignifer or Carnifex for high castes and plain English compounds such as Pit Lurker for common or descriptive kinds.
Can I use D&D or Doom demon types like balor and cacodemon?
Classic names like balor, marilith, vrock, cacodemon and mancubus are trademarks or product identity of their publishers, so they are fine for home games, fan content and reference, but original published work should use folkloric kinds or the invented species names here, which are free to use.
