Demon Species Name Generator

A demon name identifies one entity, like Mephistopheles or Baphomet, while a species name identifies a whole kind of demon, like succubus, balor, rakshasa or shedim. Species names are common nouns: they take plurals, describe a caste or breed, and are what a bestiary or monster manual lists.

Mesopotamian lore has lilitu, gallu, utukku and rabisu; Jewish tradition has shedim, mazzikin and dybbuk; Persian tradition has daeva and druj; Hindu and Buddhist texts name asura, rakshasa, pishacha, vetala and preta; Arabic folklore has jinn, ifrit, marid and ghul; Japanese folklore has oni and gaki; and Aztec myth has the tzitzimitl. Many of these appear in this generator alongside invented species.

Pick a consistent sound palette for the realm, such as hard kh, zh, rr and double consonants, then build short two or three syllable words that are easy to pluralise, like Vrakhul, Dhuroth or Szarn. Reserve Latinate names such as Ignifer or Carnifex for high castes and plain English compounds such as Pit Lurker for common or descriptive kinds.

Classic names like balor, marilith, vrock, cacodemon and mancubus are trademarks or product identity of their publishers, so they are fine for home games, fan content and reference, but original published work should use folkloric kinds or the invented species names here, which are free to use.
