Dragon Species Name Generator

Dragon species names describe a kind of dragon rather than an individual, so they read like natural history entries. Real-world folklore already gives a taxonomy to build on: a wyvern has two legs and two wings, a lindwurm has two legs and no wings, an amphiptere is a winged serpent with no legs at all, and a knucker is a water dragon from Sussex bogs. Fantasy settings layer their own systems on top. Dungeons & Dragons splits dragons into chromatic (red, blue, green, black, white), metallic (gold, silver, bronze, brass, copper), and gem (amethyst, sapphire, emerald, topaz, crystal) families, while Wings of Fire names its tribes by habitat plus 'Wing': SandWing, IceWing, MudWing, RainWing.

The strongest invented species names use one of three patterns. Habitat plus body type (Fenmire Wyrm, Highcrag Drake, Saltmarsh Serpent) tells the reader where it lives and what shape it is. Latin binomials (Draco ignifer, Cryodraco borealis) work for a scholarly bestiary or a setting where dragons are studied like animals. Descriptor plus habitat plus type (Sail-Backed Dune Wyrm, Blind Deepstone Wyrm) gives a field-guide feel with a single memorable trait.

Mix these registers to fill out an ecosystem: a few common local breeds, one or two Latin names for the academic tone, and a handful of legendary types like Catastrophe Dragon or Dracolich for the top of the food chain.
