Generate names for fictional cultures, peoples and ethnic groups for worldbuilding: invented ethnonyms in dozens of linguistic flavors, from Mesoamerican and steppe-nomad sounds to Norse, Celtic, Semitic and Polynesian styles. Ideal for fantasy novels, D&D settings, conlangs and map-making.

About culture names

A culture name is the word a people use for themselves, or the word their neighbors use for them, and in worldbuilding it does more work than almost any other name on the map. It sets the sound of every personal name, city and kingdom that follows. Real ethnonyms tend to be short roots with a plural or adjectival ending: the root carries the flavor (Tlanexca, Qadeshim, Halgrimr) and the ending tells you how the language pluralizes (-im, -oi, -ae, -ani, -ar, -folk). Getting the root right matters more than the ending.

The names here are invented but built on recognizable phonologies so you can match a culture to its place in your world: Mesoamerican tl- and -tzin clusters for jungle city-states, guttural kh and q for steppe riders and desert traders, Norse -vik and -mark for northern seafarers, soft Polynesian vowels for island peoples, Bantu prefixes for savanna kingdoms, and broad Celtic and Slavic textures for forest and river folk. A few compound names (Tidewalkers, Mirewardens) show how a people can be named by what they do rather than what they call themselves.

Pick a name whose sound you can reuse, then derive the language, the demonym and the neighboring exonym from it.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the name is an endonym (what they call themselves) or an exonym (what outsiders call them); neighbors often use a blunter, shorter word, and having both makes a setting feel lived-in.
  • Match the phonology to geography and history: a people who migrated from the steppe should sound different from the coastal traders they conquered, even if they now share a kingdom.
  • Reuse the name's sounds in everything downstream; if your culture is the Kethrim, their cities and given names should carry the same k, th and -im patterns.
  • Avoid ending every culture in your world with the same suffix; mix -i, -ae, -oi, -folk and bare roots so a reader can tell peoples apart at a glance.
  • Keep the root to one or two syllables if characters will say it constantly; Vesht or Rhun wears better in dialogue than a five-syllable tongue-twister.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good fictional culture name?

A short, pronounceable root with a consistent sound that you can reuse for the culture's language, people and places. The ending should hint at plurality or belonging (-im, -oi, -ani, -folk) so the name reads as a people rather than a single person or a city.

How are these different from civilization or nation names?

A culture or people can exist without a state: the same ethnic group may be spread across several nations, or several cultures may share one empire. Civilization and nation generators give you polities; this list gives you the peoples that live in them.

Can I use these names for D&D or a novel?

Yes. All names are invented and free to use in tabletop campaigns, novels, games and conlang projects. Many echo real-world linguistic families on purpose, so check that the flavor you pick fits the culture you are building.

How do I turn a culture name into a language or demonym?

Strip the ending to find the root (Kethrim becomes Keth-), then add your own suffixes: Kethric for the language, Kethrim for the people, Kethrian for a single person, Kethra for the homeland. Keeping one root across all forms is what makes the culture feel coherent.
