Generate fantasy month names for an invented calendar: agricultural and weather months like Frostfall and Harvestide, Old English-style monaths, elvish and latinate names, dwarven and desert-flavored months, and full-moon and saint's-day months. Built for novelists, D&D worldbuilders and game designers.

About fantasy month names

Real month names come from three places, and a fantasy calendar feels authentic when it borrows at least one of them. Some months are named for what people do or see in them: the Anglo-Saxon year ran through Solmonath (mud month), Thrimilci (three milkings) and Blotmonath (blood month, when livestock were slaughtered), and the French Republican calendar coined Brumaire, Frimaire and Thermidor from fog, frost and heat. Others honour gods, rulers or saints, as January, July and August do. A third group are simply numbered, like September through December.

For worldbuilding, the descriptive approach works best because the names also tell the reader about the climate and economy. A run of Frostfall, Deepwinter, Thawmoon and Seedfall sketches a temperate farming culture in four words; a coastal people might count Herringtide and Seawrack, and a volcanic cult Cindermonth and Pyremonth. Decide how many months your year has and whether it is lunar (in which case moon names like Hunger Moon and Blackmoon feel right) or solar. Then choose a single register for the whole set. Elvish-flavoured names such as Elenvaire and Lothrindel, latinate ones such as Brumalor and Aestivar, or harsh dwarven ones such as Khazrund and Grondrak all work, but mixing them inside one calendar reads as careless unless different cultures in your world are meant to use different calendars.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick one register per calendar and commit to it: all Old English compounds, all elvish, all latinate. Two calendars in conflict (elven and human) is a great worldbuilding detail; one calendar that mixes styles is not.
  • Let the sequence tell a story. Read your twelve (or ten, or thirteen) names in order and check that they move through the year sensibly: thaw, sowing, growth, harvest, slaughter, dark.
  • Name at least one month after a god, founder or historical event. It gives you a festival for free and hints at the culture's history.
  • Keep most month names to two or three syllables so characters can say "the third of Frostfall" without the sentence dragging.
  • If your world has a different number of days per month, give the calendar an in-world name and a reason for its length; readers forgive odd calendars that feel deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

How many months should a fantasy calendar have?

Twelve is familiar and lets readers map it onto their own year, but ten, thirteen or sixteen are all workable. Thirteen lunar months of 28 days plus a festival day is a classic choice because it mirrors real lunar calendars and gives you an intercalary holiday.

What are good sources for fantasy month names?

Old English and Norse month names, the French Republican calendar, Farmer's Almanac full-moon names, and agricultural terms such as lambing, shearing and threshing. Invented languages work too if you keep the phonology consistent across the whole year.

Should fantasy months have the word Month in the name?

Not necessarily. Real calendars use it (Hollowmonth, Blotmonath) but most fantasy months read better as a single compound or a standalone word: Frostfall, Harvestide, Elenvaire. Use -month or -tide sparingly for rhythm.

Can I use these month names in my novel or D&D campaign?

Yes. All of the names here are free to use in fiction, tabletop campaigns and games. Many worldbuilders take a handful, adjust spellings to match their setting's language, and arrange them in seasonal order.
