Generate civilization names for strategy games, alternate history, and fantasy worldbuilding, from real ancient empires like Akkad and Srivijaya to invented cultures such as the Thessari and Vantar. Includes people-names, homeland names, and dynasty forms.

About civilization names

Civilization names carry an unusual amount of weight because one word has to stand for a people, a land, a language, and often a dynasty. Real examples show how varied the sources are: Sumer and Akkad were named for cities, the Achaemenid Empire for a founding ancestor, Srivijaya from Sanskrit for "shining victory", and the Hittites from a name their neighbours used rather than their own. Many names we use today (Etruscans, Phoenicians, Aztecs) are exonyms coined by outsiders, which is a useful trick for fiction: the name a people gives itself can differ from the name on everyone else's maps.

The list mixes three kinds of entries. First, real ancient and classical civilizations from every inhabited continent, useful for alternate history, Civilization-style strategy games, and historical fiction. Second, legendary lost lands like Atlantis, Ys, and Tartessos. Third, original fantasy cultures such as the Thessari, Vantar, and the Kaelith Dominion, built with consistent sound patterns so each feels like it comes from a real language family.

A strong invented civilization name usually has two to four syllables, a distinctive consonant cluster (Vashkar, Ulthane), and works as an adjective as well as a noun. If "Thessari pottery" and "a Thessari merchant" both sound natural, the name will hold up across an entire campaign or novel.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the name is what the people call themselves or what outsiders call them; a proud endonym and a dismissive exonym for the same culture adds instant depth.
  • Pair a short root with a political form to show change over time: Sethra, then High Sethra, then the Third Kessarine Empire.
  • Give neighbouring civilizations names from different sound families (soft vowels vs. hard consonants) so readers never confuse them.
  • Check that the name flexes into an adjective and a demonym: Vantar, Vantari, the Vantari coast.
  • For strategy game mods, keep names to one or two words so they fit in UI labels and diplomacy text.

Frequently asked questions

Where do real civilization names come from?

Most derive from a leading city (Assyria from Assur, Rome from Roma), a founding ancestor or dynasty (Achaemenid, Sasanian), a river or region (Indus, Mesopotamia), or a name given by neighbours and later adopted by historians (Etruscan, Aztec).

Can I use real ancient civilization names in my game or novel?

Yes. Historical names like Akkad, Chola, and Teotihuacan are not trademarked and appear freely in fiction and games. Just be aware that using a real culture invites comparison to its actual history, so research it or rename it if you want a free hand.

How do I make a fantasy civilization name sound believable?

Choose one or two signature sounds and repeat them across the culture's cities, rulers, and words (Vashkar, Vashtari, Vashkane). Avoid apostrophes and random letter mashing, keep it pronounceable in two to four syllables, and give it a meaning in-world, even if readers never learn it.

What is the difference between a civilization, an empire, and a kingdom?

A civilization is a broad culture with shared language, technology, and cities, and can outlast many governments. An empire is one state ruling multiple peoples, usually by conquest; a kingdom is a single realm under a monarch. The Maya were a civilization made of many kingdoms; Rome was a civilization that became an empire.
