Culture Ship Name Generator

In Iain M. Banks's Culture novels, ships are run by Minds, vast artificial intelligences that choose their own names, and the names are the best joke in the series. A General Systems Vehicle the size of a city might call itself Sleeper Service or So Much For Subtlety; a warship built to end civilisations goes by Attitude Adjuster or Frank Exchange Of Views. The humour comes from the gap between what the ship is and how it talks about itself: understatement, bureaucratic politeness, a shrug where you expected a threat.

The naming conventions are loose but recognisable. Many names are complete phrases or sentences, sometimes with punctuation (Mistake Not..., What Are The Civilian Applications?). Others are one obscure or precise word: Caconym, Hylozoist, Empiricist, Arbitrary. Warships favour polite menace (Killing Time, Eight Rounds Rapid); Contact and Special Circumstances vessels prefer wry self-awareness (Grey Area, Unfortunate Conflict Of Evidence, Problem Child). Minds also riff on each other, so a name is often a reply to one that came before, like the whole series of Gravitas jokes.

A good original Culture name sounds like something a very old, very clever being would say while doing something alarming. Aim for the tone of a raised eyebrow. If it reads like a heavy-metal album or a generic 'USS Valiant', it is not Culture.
