Generate race names for fantasy worldbuilding, tabletop campaigns and novels: invented ethnonyms like Vaeldri and Korrath, descriptive peoples like the Ashborn and Duskwalkers, beastfolk, elemental kin and classic races from myth and folklore.
About race names
A race name is the word everyone in your world uses for a whole people, so it gets said more often than any character name and has to survive the trip. The good ones are short (two or three syllables), easy to pluralise, and carry a hint of where they came from. Real ethnonyms work in three ways and fantasy copies all of them: what a people call themselves (often meaning "the true folk"), what their neighbours call them (usually descriptive, sometimes unflattering), and what scholars call them in a dead liturgical tongue. Tolkien's Eldar, Sindar and Periannath cover all three for a single people.
The sound tells the reader what to expect before any description does. Liquid, open names with l, r, th and long vowels read as graceful or ancient (Ilthien, Serenyl). Closed syllables with k, g, kh and doubled consonants read as hardy or brutal (Krugath, Dhrakk). Latinate endings in -i or -ae suggest a catalogued species (Nocturi, Aquilae), while plain English compounds like Duskwalkers or Tidesworn feel like names used by farmers and soldiers rather than sages.
This generator mixes invented ethnonyms in several phonologies, descriptive kin names, beastfolk and elemental races, and classic peoples from Norse, Greek, Celtic and Near Eastern myth. Use it for D&D homebrew, worldbuilding wikis or fiction.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide who is speaking. A race's own name for itself, its neighbours' nickname and a scholar's Latinate label should all sound different; pick one for the player handbook and reveal the others in play.
- Test the plural and the adjective before committing. 'Vaeldri' gives you 'the Vaeldri' and 'Vaeldrin steel' easily; a name that turns ugly in the plural will irritate you for years.
- Match phonology to the culture's vibe: soft l/r/th for elegant or ancient races, hard k/g/kh clusters for martial ones, plain English compounds for earthy folk.
- Avoid reusing the most famous trademarked names (Drow, Tiefling, Draenei) in anything you plan to publish; use them only as stylistic reference points.
- Keep it under four syllables. Race names are repeated constantly in dialogue and rulebooks, and anything longer gets abbreviated by your players anyway.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good fantasy race name?
Brevity, a clear sound profile and an easy plural. Two or three syllables, a phonology that signals the culture (soft for elves, hard for orcs, Latinate for catalogued species) and a form that works as both noun and adjective, like Vaeldri and Vaeldrin.
Can I use these race names in my D&D campaign or published setting?
The invented and descriptive names here are free to use anywhere. Classic names drawn from public myth (Selkies, Fomorians, Jotnar) are also fine. A few well-known game-specific names appear for reference and should be avoided in commercial work.
Should a race's name describe what they look like?
Names given by outsiders usually do (the Painted Men, Thornblooded), while a people's own name rarely does. Mixing the two makes the setting feel older: the elves of your world might call themselves Ilthien while humans call them the Fair Folk.
How is a race name different from a species or tribe name?
In most fantasy settings 'race' covers a whole kind of people (elves, dwarves, dragonborn), species is the same idea in sci-fi or scholarly framing, and tribe or clan is a subgroup within a race. The generator leans toward whole-people names; see the tribe and clan generators for subdivisions.
